'I just shot someone': The dramatic moment man who 'gunned down innocent black woman, 19, on his porch' called police to confess

The unnamed man who gunned down 19-year-old Renisha McBride after she knocked on his door looking for help, called police soon after saying he had, 'just shot someone on his porch.' In an emergency call made moments after the tragic incident, he said he thought he had shot someone and then hung up. The police dispatcher then re-established contact with him and he told her he didn't know who the victim was. Minutes after that an officer arrived at the scene of the killing and said: 'There's somebody down on the porch ... it appears it's going to be a black female.' The Detroit News got hold of the audio footage from the early hours of November 2, when tragic Ms McBride was gunned down in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

Ms McBride – who is black - apparently knocked on the door in the predominantly white neighborhood, looking for help after crashing her car a few blocks away. The audio obtained through Broadcastify provides a glimpse into the events of that morning. At 4.46am the female dispatcher says: 'Just received a 911 call from a male (who) thinks he just shot someone on his porch. Then he hung up; we're trying to call back

About a minute later, the dispatcher radioed: 'Units responding: We have the male on the line. (He) states he doesn’t know this person. Trying to get further (information).' A responding officer told the dispatcher: 'There's somebody down on the porch ... it appears it's going to be a black female.'

It is indeed odd.

I want to know if he turned on the porch light and WHEN he knew it was a black female. He told the police those facts.

I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt and saying she was dazed and confused from the impact of the accident. It was reported that she was completely wet and wonder if it was raining that night.

I wonder why LE won’t release more info.

Guy walked outside with a shotgun and shot her in the face.

Hang him.

Not quite so fast there. Accident was 3+ hours before the shooting. Where was she? Was she agitated enough he might reasonably think she meant to rob rob the house, or possibly enter under false pretenses and commit some other act? She may have been very irrational and bringing the gun to the door might well be reasonable in that case.

It says she hit the car and then drove off. While the penalty for hit and run is not death, she came back to a location no where close to the parked car. Blocks away. Probably hysterical and not making much sense.

Family says she drove around for hours looking for help. I call BS on that. She didn't need help, if she did call 911 and have them give her directions to the nearest police station.

What I suspect happened was that she was drunk/high on something and didn't want the police to find her until it had worn off. This would explain a lot.

There is a reasonably common MO for home invasion robberies where a single female knocks on the door. When it opens her male accomplices rush the door and force their way in. She holds it open just long enough for them to get to it before it can be closed and locked. She looks harmless, but it is actually deadly to the occupants of the home. This is Detroit -- every scam known has been tried here in the recent past and may be tried on you tonight.

She didn’t drive away, she wandered off, leaving her car.

“...A neighbor called police and tried to help Ms McBride who was apparently disorientated and bleeding from her head.

But in her confused state she wandered off. At 1.40am a police cruiser was dispatched to the scene, but Ms McBride was gone. She walked for a few blocks, before knocking on the shooter’s door. She was not shot until around 4am and it is not known what she had been doing for the two-and-a-half hours before her death....”

So she wandered around the neighborhood for a couple of hours.....or crawled into some bushes to sleep it off....or who knows what.

Autopsy says she was not shot at close range.

This is quite different than most people think. I remember from the Trayvon Martin case that "close range" was less than 1 foot. Intermediate range was 1 to 3 feet, and anything over 3 feet was long range.

Not at close range just means more than 12", not a great distance.

Trayvon was sitting on top of GZ beating his head into the sidewalk and the autopsy says he was shot at "intermediate range".

I agree with your assessment of measurements. I think LE takes into account powder burn.

I noticed the house appears to be 1950s, with a porch that, to me, seems somewhat protected. It was said the porch was “small” around 5’ square. Was his porch light working? Did he ever turn it on?

He said when she came to the house, it was totally dark.

Why in the world would he open the door if he was in fear of his life? Sounds like he realized he made a terrible error of judgement (and never walked himself through this scenario in advance which was another one) and is trying to weasel out of a 2nd degree murder charge.

Seems like he panicked and shot the girl. Was his fear reasonable? When did he realize it was a woman he shot? Did he shoot her through the door? Did he warn her he was going to shoot if she did not leave? Did it go off accidentally or did he pull the trigger out of fear.

So many questions to be answered and depending on the answers I would think a wrongful killing/manslaughter charge would be out of the question.

Did he open the door? I have not seen an article stating he opened the door.

He also says it did not sound like knocking, that the sound was more intense.

“Did he open the door? I have not seen an article stating he opened the door.”

I haven’t either, so I’m making the assumption that if he shot through the door, or if the victim (that is what I see her as right now) opened it, that would have been reported, therefore he opened it. Also, this was around 4:30 AM - very unlikely it was unlocked.

And it doesn’t matter if it was knocking or something louder, IMO. It’s not a situation that rightly called for the application of lethal force. And we have only his word for the claim it was louder than knocking. If she was kicking the door or hammering on it with a rock or something, there will be evidence of that which will come out, but it doesn’t change things.

I was thinking he may have shot through the peephole. I know I would’t open the door to confront the person.

If he shot through the peephole he would have missed a lot especially if there was no porch light.

I got the feeling this guy was scared [Detroit] … and he over reacted.

“Why in the world would he open the door if he was in fear of his life?”

Perhaps because the banging stopped? I would certainly be tempted to open the door to see if whoever was out there was gone before I called the police.

And if she then sort of jumped out of the darkness at him....even innocently, just happy that someone had finally opened the door....well, that could easily startle someone into pulling a trigger....

But it’s all just speculation until we hear his side of the story. Several people on this thread have stated “never talk to the police.” So I’m not gonna condemn the guy because he’s taking his time getting his story out.

“I was thinking he may have shot through the peephole”

Not likely even with a handgun and less so with a shotgun!

This caper is a big ole mess.

Occam’s razor insist that we use the simplest assumptions in the absence of hard data. Here’s my attempt:

The decedent was as high as a kite at the time she contacted the homeowner. (Basis: traffic collision with a parked car at 1:30 am, then leaving the scene). Like many people under the influence, she was a bit of a pain in the ass when she knocked on this guy’s door an hour and a half later. And maybe more than a little bit scary. (Front for a home invasion robbery? etc.)

The homeowner, understandably defensive at that hour and in Detroit, Michigan of all places, goes to check out the noise. He has his finger on the trigger for whatever reason...poor discipline certainly, bad training possibly, just due to the hour and waking from a sound sleep understandably. He goes out to check out the commotion, the female does something to startle him, and he reflexively contracts the muscles in his had. Gun goes off with predictable results.

Homeowner, horrified at the dead female at his feet, calls 911 and barfs all over himself.

“Family” calls ambulance chasing lawyer, and the rest is the stories we see in the media.

Same standards should apply to him as to police. If he had cause to fear for his safety then its a good shoot.

That is a cogent, rational explanation which appears well-grounded in reality. And I’m not just saying that because I was going to write a very similar post.
