Is nothing sacred? Stand up for real meaning of Thanksgiving, skip the shopping on Turkey Day

I was almost expecting it when the KMarts and Walmarts of the world announced their stores would be open this year on Thanksgiving night. Sigh. It seemed to reflect that good ol’ American over-the-top holiday consumerism which seems to creep up on us closer and closer to Labor Day every year.

But again, that’s the big boxes, the new stores on the block; the ones who HAVE to pull a stunt.

Now comes word that the department store synonymous with Thanksgiving and Christmas, indeed the legendary setting of the classic movie, “Miracle On 34th Street” is stepping into the fray…Macy’s is opening on Thanksgiving. Macy’s? Seriously? Is NOTHING sacred? Apologies for the cliché question, but I have an answer: No.

In America, nothing is sacred anymore.

It’s the “Broken Windows” theory of crime in the context of our culture, our values: if petty vandalism goes unchecked, not only does more vandalism occur, but an environment is created leading to more violent crimes which occur more frequently. Eventually society ends up an epidemic of crime and the commensurate breakdown in the quality of life.

We're no longer living in the 18th or 19th or 20th century.

Thanksgiving is Thursday.

We shop on Friday because we don't have to work and hubby is available to babysit. Please be real. There are things to do and we do it...shopping is one of those things.

I’ve NEVER shopped on Thanksgiving day, the day after, even the weekend after. This is time for us to reflect and give thanks. This is one of the few long weekends I allow myself leisure. If that means drinking beer and watching football, that’s what I do.

There will come a day where the backlash against retailers is so much so that retailers don’t go into the black the day after, because people will be so fed up with their materialistic pandering BS.

Thanksgiving was always about deer hunting here in Upstate NY. And every year, hubby would show up late at his mom's.

His dad would grit his teeth and we would pray for the blessings we have received. No shopping back then. It was all about the deer....and the 12 pointer that got away.

Exactly

After an afternoon of gorgeing myself on good, hot wholesome food, followed by good, unhealthy sugary crap topped off with beer, wine or other beverage ..... while snoozing in front of, or argueing with ... the TV football game ....

"Hey ... let's go shoppin' ! " ... is not even in my vocabulary.

I’ve never shopped on Thanksgiving or the days following it, either. But this year I have a new problem. My daughter, long time unemployed, just got a job at a call center. We will find out today, but chances are she will have to work on Thanksgiving... after all, those shoppers will be maxing out their credit cards and many will call to complain! I haven’t asked her if she’ll be working on Christmas, but my only hope is that all shopping will be done by then. Now, as for the day after Christmas...

Wanna fix the expected slump in low end retail stores for holiday, Christmas sales...just simple broom Obama and Obamacare!!! The Democrat Party has a very short window of opportunity to force Obama to resign, repeal the entire Obamacare bill, and/or, impeach Obama!!! If they do not take action to broom Obama very soon....the Democrat Party will face destruction...like they never dreamed of, come November, 2014!!!

It’s gotten almost like skip the turkey on shopping day. We don’t skip the turkey. Just the shopping on turkey day. Too many didiots on the streets saving a few bucks. Skip the shopping completely and save a bunch of bucks.

It’s a PERSONAL CHOICE whether or not you go shopping on Thursday (or Fri, Sat, Sun). I’m thankful we still HAVE that choice. I’m going to embrace capitalism while we still have it. Don’t like the Thursday thing? Don’t do it.

Not only have I noticed the increasing number of stores now open on Thanksgiving, but the number of “pre-Black Friday” sales that started last week have skyrocketed. Next year they will probably have to have the pre-pre-Black Friday sales.

I refuse to shop or eat out on Thanksgiving. I won’t be the reason some poor shmuck has to work that day.

Given the state of the economy the additional day of shopping could very well make the difference of survival for many businesses. Simply don’t go shopping if you object. For those who are compelled to work, I don’t have an answer. It would be too subjective to personal circumstance.

As I understand it, the ‘Christmas shopping season’ traditionally begins after Thanksgiving. Canadian businesses are now adopting this idea, as well. The problem is, our Thanksgiving Day is the first Monday in October, so we get an additional six weeks of Christmas promotions.

FWIW, Costco in Calgary already had Christmas trees, ornaments and chocolates for sale in mid-September.

What, pray tell ... do you HAVE to get Thursday night or Friday ... that you didn't already have when you went shopping last weekend, picked a couple of forgotten things Monday, missed a few things and had to go out Tuesday .. and that last minute whipped cream y'forgot and got Wednesday so you could "be ready" Thursday ...??

"Cause .. y'know .. you did all that shopping so you wouldn't have to shop.

Between this and the nuts who already have their Christmas trees up, I want to scream.

This is my favorite holiday of the year. What can I say? I live for basting a giant bird and coming up with a vat of gravy my sister insists is it’s only food group. (that’s my job :))

I usually skip church because of the turkey, but again, this is always a warm wonderful service.

Nothing is “sacred”, really, unless God makes it sacred to you in a real way. I don’t believe it matters what era you live in. Yes, life is generally better if society has even a sham form of godliness and plays by “rules”, but when disintegration comes “what can be shaken will be shaken”. I’m preaching my own funeral here, lol, but we each have to call on the name of The Lord and be made whole to live as those “seated with Christ” in whatever time we find ourselves in this present evil age.

Jesus is the Way, and every other way is not. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

People work on Thanksgiving, always have. Many stores are open on Thanksgiving, always have been. Funny how nobody cared about it until WalMart decided to be open, then it became a great tragedy. I just hope none of the people complaining about it are planning on watching the parade, or really any TV, don’t listen to the radio either, and you sure better not need gas or emergency ingredients for dinner, pretty much all travel is out... Meanwhile I’m going to my favorite restaurant.
