Patty Murray backs off military pension cut
Politico ^ | 18 Dec 13 | AUSTIN WRIGHT

Sen. Patty Murray is distancing herself from a cut in military pensions in the budget deal she brokered with Rep. Paul Ryan.

Her unease about a key element of her own deal, which passed the Senate on Wednesday and is now headed to President Barack Obama, comes amid a backlash from veterans groups and Senate defense hawks that has put her and her colleagues in a tough spot going into an election year.

Murray’s response: The pension cut isn’t final.

“We wrote this bill in a way that will allow two years before this change is implemented so that Democrats and Republicans can keep working to either improve this provision or find smarter savings elsewhere,” she said on the Senate floor this week.

“In other words,” she added, “we can and we will look at other, hopefully better ways to change this policy going forward.”

Her stance provides a major opening for opponents of the cut to work to get it tossed out or replaced with alternate savings — an effort that could weaken the budget deal and force vulnerable senators to continue defending their support for an agreement that would provide sequester relief for federal agencies at the expense of veterans.

“We’re probably going to lose this fight, but we will win the war,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, who voted against the budget deal, declared to a group of veterans on Tuesday — vowing to take this fight into the next year. G

Did’nt he make a statement that it’s about time that the military personel take a cut because the federal employs have taken cut after cut?

Then he smiled and patted himelf on the back for a job well done.

I guess that there is no place within the bloated government that cuts could be made.

Screw the pormise that was made to the men who lived and die for their country only to be stabbed in the back by elected official who have no problem doing it with smiles on their faces.

C'mon linda, tell us true: how would you have voted if you weren't gonna lose your seat this year?

People in WA state and WI wouldn’t mind seeing a military pension cut at all, would they? Unless they are affected veterans

The purpose of Paul Ryan is to make Dan Quayle look good. Is Quayle on board for Jebbie now?

It’s that but so much more. They are not bmnot paying the military. It is so much worse

The military are used to not getting a lot of money. They are used to being told one thing then having plans change suddenly. That’s all part of it

And they plan their lives and that of tgeir children. They are enormously dedicated to education for their families and they value real estate. They plan their lives, retirees do

They plan according to the few certainties and one is how much they will expect their income to be.

If not they will just take their skills and dedication and education and take their chances in the civilian world because it often is a better deal for them and it always tempts

You can’t imagine one going to see a financial advisor and saying, ok here’s how much you need to put away to do this then educate then purchase a house then that etc, and we don’t know what congress will do with your retirement 15 years from now, so we can’t plan for that

That’s a deal BREAKER. It’s when they say no, I’ll go make real money and invest in an independent IRA for that. It’s a better chance

Plus, the congress represents the people. Tge people are allowing this. If the military can’t depend on the people to take care of a few necessary certainties, why should their dedication to protecting the people not take a hit?

In other words, at times like this we think the military is in it for money. No And people will find out what happens when congress makes it about money. They’ll leave and go make money.

A good military absolutely depends not on money. They are NOT mercernaries, but it sepends on honor

Congress has to honor its contracts with the military. Or there won’t be one. Not a volunteer one

That pic of Queen Murray is pegging my Gaydar. Just wondering if she will be touring Ft Lewis McCord or maybe Subase Bangor over the holidays? She must be “proud” as can be of that lazyass effort at budget-making.

Okay.

For those with military service, we know there are different levels and types of disabilities.

When ‘they’ are talking about exempting those with a ‘disability,’ just what are they talking about?

Combat-only disability ratings?

I don’t have a combat disability but after a career flying fighters I have darned near lost my hearing in one ear and have permanent spine damage and a torn muscle in my neck that causes discomfort (mostly on cold days). With my 30% VA disability rating, where do I fit in. . .or do I not fit in?

They have not given this much thought at all.

Heck, it’s like they never read the bill they voted on. . .oh, wait. . .

I would guess they are looking at VA rated disability, which I believe does not distinguish combat or non-combat injuries per se in terms of ratings. From what I have gathered with the current bill that passed the House and Senate, Ryan wanted pensions cuts so bad he could taste them. Murray, not so much, but she went along, and now apparently regrets it. Ryan got his direction on the provisions to cut military retiree pensions direct from the DoD, and Ryan has blamed Hagel, who denied any culpability to Senator Graham (I believe Hagel is lying). Under the new agreement, you would have to be medically retired to be exempt from the Pension cuts. There are only a select few of these cases compared to the vast majority who retire. The DoD knows this, and that is why they pushed for this exclusion, because it gives them more money to steal from their retirees and currently serving members in uniform who will bear the full front of these costs.

You can be medically retired (you have to meet a board, a battery of doctors, etc), but it could be for something such as sleep apnea. That person will escape the COLA cuts. But, a 80% Disabled vet who has a Purple Heart (and I know of one) gets screwed.....under the Ryan-Murray deal they steal from his pension.

The reason these cuts were included was they know there is no way they will survive...they get ti claim the supposed “cost savings” then replace the spending after the outrage.

It is the same reason why the citizens of King County (seattle area) are asked to vote for a Medic One levy every few years...because they fund needle exchange programs first and then let the people vote to raise their taxes to pay for the skilled nedics who arrive when your seriously injured and need to be rushed to the E.R..

Well, we shall see, but I can tell you this:

-they sure as hell survived via overwhelming votes in both the House and the Senate to implement them

That does not bode well for currently serving military and military retired veterans.

When you dance with the devil you’re going to get burned.

Paul Ryan just proved how stupid he is to partner with these Democrats.

Asses are protected species in both WA and WI. If George Washington were around, he would demand that that pitiful state change its name.
