Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Sunday defended cuts to military retiree benefits, noting that Congress would change a provision for individuals who were medically retired or received survivors benefits.
In a USA Today op-ed published on Sunday, the Republican budget guru, who spent weeks crafting a two-year bipartisan budget deal with Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray (D-Wash.), noted that the budget chiefs have agreed to amend the law well before the reform takes effect in December 2015.
Many raised concerns that these reforms would affect the retired pay of service members who are medically retired and those receiving survivors benefits. So Senator Murray and I have agreed to amend the law to exclude them well before the reform takes effect in December 2015, the House Budget Committee chairman wrote.
He explained the rationale behind the joint decision to scale back benefits for military retirees under the age of 62 or reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for working-age military retirees - that has become a source of controversy, in recent days.
If (younger retirees) retire before age 62, the annual increase in their retired pay will be 1% less than the inflation rate. In other words, their benefits will grow every year just at a slower rate, Ryan wrote.
The cut is anticipated to save $6 billion over a 10-year period.

Chaplin....sadly this is the type of - quite frankly - “bottom line fiscal heartlessness” endemic to hard core “fiscal only” conservatives. Notice how many on this “conservative” forum don’t really speak out against cutting military retired pay...or serving military pay. In reality, many here (sadly) see the military as a “leech” on the people...just as they do anyone working for the gov. Truly a sad state of affairs...too much foolish envy.
Ryan’s big government Republicanism makes it easy to understand why this country is in trouble
OK, Pauly boy, what will that six billion dollars be used for? That Compromise Budget Method that you and Murray came up with.....why don’t you explain it? All you did was get rolled by the Democrats again.
hero to zero in .2 seconds.
He is off my list for a. the original idea and especially b. trying to BS us with this “explanation”.
I’m not giving up on Ryan yet.. this is definitely AFU but it won’t stand. It doesn’t kick in until 2015 and I expect it will have been fixed before it ever does.
Only way to fix anything is to clean house in 2014. If that doesn’t happen then we’ve got no one to blame but ourselves.
Really? 6 billion? Isn't that what our deficit is in a single day? Sorry, my calculator doesn't go up to a trillion to divide by 365. Anyone?
This is a guy so many were pinning their hopes on. He has caught DC Disease. Screw him and every GOP elite. Now, if Ted Cruz goes bad, there's no turning back.
How many times have we seen this low low level of treachery from the latest next great savior of the right? How can anyone blame some conservatives for being utterly pessimistic and cynical?
Yes it is an outrage.
Paul no-chance-now-as-GOP-nominee Ryan seems to be following his top of the ticket in turning off natural support. Will he become a burr in the saddle to the next GOP nominee, GOP president?
Let the history books show who really did this.
They don’t call them the stupid party for nothing.
Pinging Freeper Sarasmom
Pas it now and we will change it later.
Is he really that stupid?
No. They are not the Stupid Party.
They are the COMPLICIT PARTY.
No, but he thinks WE are.
He's not stupid; he's compromised.
My treachery counter lost track years ago.
Cynical? Pessimistic? Not me. I went beyond that. I’m on the other side of cynical and pessimistic. I.e hopeful and optimistic. Just not about politics.
DITTO many times
Sorry Laz, I don't care who destroyed our Republic, whether it be Dems or RINO's. History will show they are both responsible for the destruction that our brilliant Founding Fathers created. Just too unfortunate those guys in wigs could not have put in an Amendment for term limits. But then, they thought some would serve and then go back to their farms.
If I were King of the USA for a month in no certain order:
1. Term limits;
2. Reduced Congressional sessions, much like Texas every two years, and shorter sessions;
3. ALL laws apply to all branches, departments, and staff;
4. Repeal the 17th Amendment;
5, Grand-father ALL legislation to four years, except for military funding;
6. Eliminate many agencies and departments: EPA, Interior, Homeland Security (redundant), and so so many others. Let those bureaucrats get real jobs. Fire them all like Reagan did with air-traffic controllers;
7. Enforce our borders and that includes kicking out illegal children. Let Mexico deal with them;
8. Concealed carry in every State or on a National level;
9. Eliminate death taxes;
10. Reduce other taxes and regulations that stifle business;
11. Make a Fedgov law that no one loses their home due to municipal property taxes. That works within the 14th Amendment. One Fedgov law I could live with;
12. ALL new legislation by Fedgov must past original (not perceived) Constitutional scrutiny by a non-partisan organization like the OMG;
13. Lastly, Congress repeal the right of the President being able to put our airmen/troops in harms way just because he thinks he's doing the right thing within 60 days?. Stop being the policemen of the world and just kick the shit out of anyone who attacks our way of life - no mercy, including nukes.
I have other Laz, but not sure I can say it on this forum. What do you think about the above?
