A Virginia license plate with the Tea Party-embraced “Don’t Tread on Me” logo is a big seller, suggesting the movement remains popular, at least in the state, even after a tough loss in this year’s gubernatorial election.

At least five other states also sell the specialty plates: Arizona, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas. But in Virginia, the tag ranks No. 2 among such plates approved in the past five years and ninth among more than 200 total.

The tag was issued to roughly 21,800 Virginia-registered vehicles in just the first 20 months of sales, according to state figures reported by The Virginian-Pilot newspaper.

“It is a symbol of frustration … a symbol of disgust with the government,” David Dwyer, a former Hampton Roads Tea Party chairman, told the newspaper.

VA has more than 200 options for license plates?

No this stuff is all computer generated and made by outside vendors - 3M is the big cheese in this business.

They stopped “stamping” plates 15 yrs ago here.

In Pa, we only have back plates. My front plate is the Gadsden.

if your afraid, go and hide.

not everyone is, afraid, though. I have my NRA life membership and NYSRPA life membership emblems... I would not have such a plate for a different reason.... I refuse to pay the state for any type of vanity plate. One of my main purpose in life is to deny the state as much money as possible(legally).

I’m in Northern Va. Where all the dems live and I see these plates all the time. I would love to get them but fear retribution at work and my husband works for gov’t and won’t let me.

Virginia just elected the sleaziest SOB in the Democratic Party to be its Governor.

The Republican was as close to the Tea Party platform as you probably get these days.

It seems pretty clear that VA is going the opposite direction.

License plates represent taxes and bowing to government entities in order to use public (i.e. commonly-owned) roads.

Getting Gadsden plates, therefore, is akin to getting personalized IRS 1040 forms.

Unclear on the concept, methinks.

I wouldn’t get this kind of specialty license for fear that a liberal would vandalize my vehicle in retaliation.
