"The New York State Legislature needs to Raise the Age of criminal responsibility, and they need to do it this year," demands the subheadline on MSNBC.com's landing page this afternoon for a story headlined, "Stop charging kids as adults." The column, co-authored by former NAACP president Ben Jealous and actress Rosario Dawson, promotes a push by the Citizens Committee for Children of New York [CCCNY] to change Empire State law so that minors aged 16 years old cannot be charged as adults.
Jealous and Dawson don't disclose to what age they believe the age of criminal responsibility should be raised, but they do include a reference to mental maturity which suggests they might be happy with it falling somewhere in the mid-20s:

Let there be personal accountability and responsibility for all, because with that comes liberty and freedom. When someone else (eg. big government) tries to absolve you of responsibility and accountability, well, then they must control your behavior too. Then we get fascism and tyranny.

If they aren’t responsible till they’re 25, then maybe they shouldn’t be allowed to drink alcohol, smoke, enter contracts, get married, etc. till they are 25.
I would be OK with it if we raised the age to vote to 30. That would eliminate the Democrat party. Hell, 25 would be sufficient.

Why is this an issue? Just to change a bunch of arbitrary stuff that happens to regulate or affect large, large componenets of the social order....just to do it?

Typical left wing mantra that seeks to absolve individuals of accountability for their actions. The NAACP for years has moaned that there are too many young black men in jail and that they are merely “victims” of their oppressive social environment. Funny thing is that these men have been through the system many times and have caused much mayhem before they are locked up. If they were allowed to remain free in their communities, minority groups would be screaming for more protection as crime would skyrocket.Well New york City is about to de facto implement the progressive fantasies the liberals want. Higher taxes, the elimination of “stop and frisk”, More “resources for education” and less discipline in public schools. Sadly most rational people know how this will turn out.
