Democrats must decide how far to bend on immigration
The Hill ^ | 1/20/14 | Russell Berman

Congressional Democrats and advocates for immigration reform will have to decide how much to bend as they await proposals from House Republicans that are likely to fall far short of what they have demanded.

House GOP leaders plan to release as soon as next week their principles for rewriting the nation’s immigration laws, a document that could be followed by a series of legislative proposals.

The principles are expected to be broad-brush in nature and emphasize border and interior security measures, but they are likely to include a first-ever official House GOP endorsement of legal status for many of the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants, according to people familiar with the deliberations.

Left-leaning advocates say they are encouraged by the move and view it as another critical step in the GOP’s shift on immigration over the last several years.

“We feel like the dynamics in the House are definitely tilting in our favor right now,” said Marshall Fitz, director of immigration policy at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank.

We saw how willing they were to bend back in 2007 when John Cornyn, not exactly a conservative stalwart U.S. Senator, proposed an amendment to exclude any gang members and convicted felons from any amnesty. Every Democrat and several RINOs voted it down.

Their slogan "You Can't Deport Everybody" really means that "You Can't Deport Anybody."

Red China as well; they’re everywhere.

Democrats need to explain to the army of unemployed democrats just WHY they’re bringing in illegals to compete with them for jobs.

No they don't. No one will ask them to.

Here’s the problem .. as soon as the repubs agree to an immigration plan, the dems will find some way to alter it.

After all, we know why the dems want the immigration plan to go through - DEMOCRAT VOTERS.

Sooooo .. suppose everybody agrees on a plan to legalize all these immigrants .. but not give them citizenship .. how many dems will begin caterwauling the very next day .. IT’S NOT FAIR !!

Why will they do that ..?? SO OBAMA CAN TAKE HIS PEN AND MAKE THEM ALL CITIZENS WHO ARE ABLE TO VOTE.

Anybody who believes that any of these immigrants are going to be massive REPUB VOTERS .. is living in LA LA LAND.

Remember when Bush got elected the 2nd time ..?? Remember what the difference was in the vote from 2000 ..?? It was over 4 MILLION PEOPLE. When the dems saw that number; they knew they would not be able to win elections if all the repubs voted .. SOOOOOOOO THE ONLY SOLUTION IS AMNESTY ..!!

OH-OH,

Aren't you the guy who keeps saying nothing will happen and that immigration reform is dead in this session of Congress? I have been trying to warn you.

But I still have yet to hear a single Dem say that they would a support an immigration bill that has no citizenship in it.

Au contraire, For Obama, Congress, a last grasp at immigration"

"But some advocates of reform are beginning to rally around an idea to grant immigrants legal status in the U.S. and leave the question of citizenship out of the legislation. In other words, they can work, but not vote.

"I don't think this is a good idea because citizenship is important, but I don't think it is a big deal breaker either," Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., a leading congressional advocate for overhauling U.S. immigration law, said in a speech last month. "Right now we have to stop the deportations that are breaking up families. And if we do not get citizenship this year, we will be back next year and the year after that."

"If successful, an immigration compromise could restore some luster to Obama's agenda, tarnished in 2013 by failures on gun legislation, bipartisan pushback on his efforts to take military action against Syria and the disastrous enrollment start for his health care law."

We will see what Dems say if the House GOP does this PR conference and it has no citizenship in it.

Any legislation that allows the lawbreakers to stay and work here, the object of their crime, is amnesty. Citizenship is just the cherry on top.

And once they are legalized, the Dems will use the need for citizenship as a weapon against the Reps. The Dems get legalization and they still have the issue to use as a club against the GOP.

The legal immigration system brings in hundreds of thousands of future Dem voters every year. With 1.2 million legal immigrants entering annually, we essentially have an amnesty every ten years in terms of Dem voters. Amnesty with citizenship just hastens the process.

I gave you the link in post #27 that quotes Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill) who is the leading Dem in the House on immigration reform.

I think the GOP doing this now is bad idea. Obama already has his deferred thing.

The fix is in. The Reps are going to make a deal to legalize the status of the lawbreakers in exchange for a doubling of the guest worker program, something the GOP's corporate paymasters want desperately. Once legalization occurs, the game is over.

What many don't seem to realize is that even without citizenship, the Dems are well on their way to becoming the permanent majority party due in large part to legal immigration. The status quo on immigration is a loser for the GOP, which should be calling for reduced legal immigration numbers to protect American workers. The GOP would rather do the bidding of the corporate elite than support an immigration policy that serves our national interests.

The GOP should impeach Obama over his "deferred thing," which is unconstitutional and exceeds his authority. Obama has legalized the status of over 500,000 Dreamers and issued them work permits. The numbers are still increasing and could approach nearly 2 million. Reps like Goodlatte are talking about legalizing the status of the parents using existing laws. Then we are near 6 million with legalized status.

RE :”The fix is in. The Reps are going to make a deal to legalize the status of the lawbreakers in exchange for a doubling of the guest worker program, something the GOP’s corporate paymasters want desperately. Once legalization occurs, the game is over. “

This is just hypothetical but what if the GOP put up a bill that just makes law Obama’s deferred program?

They have to register for short term legalization but they never get permanent legalization or citizenship. That would put the Dems in a tough situation and it wouldn't change anything.

I saw a post that says that few are even signing up for that because its a risk.

RE :"The GOP should impeach Obama over his "deferred thing,"

Not a chance that will happen. In fact it was interesting that when Cruz was asked about impeachment he replied :"The GOP doent have enough votes in the Senate for that"

In November, contrary to conventional wisdom, the Republicans will have a stunning defeat.

And when it’s all over, you can trace it back to the Republican House elites, Boehner, Cantor, and Goodlatte, endorsing amnesty for illegals.

The American people no longer have anyone representing them in Washington - certainly not the Democrats, but also the Republican establishment which looks upon Americans with condescension and conservatives with contempt.

Pandering will get them a handful of Hispanic votes, and cause millions of conservatives to stay home.

WE should go talk to on-the-street Democrats and ask them how they feel... Maybe they don’t want 20 million new people to compete with for the few jobs available.

The bulk of them likely get a check from Obama and don’t care to hold a job.

True; but I think we'd only need one to "get the ball rolling" for others to polarize to one side or the other.
