Why the U.S. Military Can’t Kill the Benghazi Attackers With a Drone Strike
Time ^ | February 2, 2014 | By Mark Thompson

It was most assuredly an act of war. Insurgent Libyans, some plainly inspired by, if not directly linked to al Qaeda, attacked sovereign U.S. territory in Benghazi on Sep. 11, 2012. In two separate strikes on diplomatic outposts in that eastern Libyan city, they killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, computer expert Sean Smith, and embassy security personnel (and former Navy SEALs) Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods.

In the 16 months since, the perpetrators remain at large. What is becoming clear is that the U.S. has tied its own hands in trying to bring those responsible to justice.

“The individuals related in the Benghazi attack, those that we believe were either participants or leadership of it, are not authorized use of military force,” Army General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a top-secret hearing of the House Armed Services Committee Oct. 10.

Dempsey said the U.S. military could do little more than act like a sheriff’s posse, sent out to round up suspects.

“In other words, they don’t fall under the AUMF [Authorization for Use of Military Force] authorized by the Congress of the United States,” Dempsey continued, in testimony declassified Jan. 13. “So we would not have the capability to simply find them and kill them, either with a remotely-piloted aircraft or with an assault on the ground.”

WTF? They don’t fall under the AUMF? When has that ever stopped Obama from breaking the law?

Of course not. However, in this case obastard is protecting his Muslim Brotherhood allies, so use of force under AUMF is unsurprisingly denied...

Sooo, I suppose having them die in a nuclear test
gone horribily wrong is right out too.

...but if a 19 year old American makes a propaganda video for Al Qaeda, 0bama can drone strike him because the kid is on the President’s kill list.

Got it!

I’m far less interested in killing or capturing the actual physical culprits than I am in finding out what went on in the Obama White House in regard to the attack. Terrorists are a dime a dozen. Finding the liars who helped swing a presidential election: Priceless.

After you feed BS to your own people for months and months you can’t change directions and say, “I know we told you it was just a riot because of a film, but now we’ve decided it was an act of war under the label of terrorism.”

Benghazi was the site of a ARMS TRADING DEAL where WE, thru Amb. Stevens were ARMING OUR ENEMIES with MANPADS....surface to Air missiles!!!!

MAybe Boehner was briefed about it and that's why he's not going to pursue the investigation!!

I have to disagree with your priorities there. Our dead Navy SEALs deserve justice. There is no reason we shouldn’t pursue killing the actual culprits. We already know who swung a presidential election and we’ll never get justice in that arena as long as Dirty Harry holds the Senate.

When the person to whom you refer is the man at the bottom of the rabbit bole. (The power behind the power behind the insurgents, as it were.)

...because Obama is saving his drones to kill Tea Party "terrorists"; the real Enemy of the State, at least in Obama's mind.

Just a personal suspicion here, but I'm thinking if they were to drone strike some of the real perpetrators of the Benghazi attacks, the strikes would end up being somewhere on the eastern seaboard of CONUS.

Right.

Bottom line...if the US had more ‘cordial’ relations with Israel... maybe the Benghazi wrecking crew would be food for the worms, already!

They were working for obama and clinton in a black ops gun running trade that if made public... would bring down the US Government and most agencies involved. Think syria and Egypt... Egypt woke up and got lean and mean and dealt with the Butcher of Benghazi and obama’s agenda. This is not rocket science people.

Even in the most restrictive ROE, fleeing with intent to regroup in order to do harm justifies shoot to kill.

Dempsey is a windbag putz.
