The Navy is investigating cheating allegations against about one-fifth of its trainers at a school for naval nuclear power reactor operators.
It is the second exam-cheating scandal to hit the military this year, on top of disclosures of ethical lapses at all ranks in the military as it transitions from more than a decade of war-fighting.

There are a lot of corner cutters that need to be purged. They are accidents waiting to happen. It feeds my paranoia as well, but when I see the harm caused by bad apples, then I want them gone. I have no interest in seeing an entire sub crew go boom, and I doubt you do either.
Sorry Bob, but I used to think the same, but I have many friends in the military who are silently talking of the way many good men are being purged from the forces while many who should be purged are being promoted.
Look up the service records of some of these guys. MOST have perfect LONG services, highly decorated.

I believe only 2 Generals were fired under Bush’s 2 terms total. There are currently 48 4-Star Generals.

I suspect, if a person could truly investigate the cause of this, you would find that at the heart of it would be the perversion of evals for commanders.
The culture has gotten to be so stringent and ridiculous that ANY hint of imperfection in your command means that you are a failure and not eligible for advancement. Therefore commanders will overlook, avoid, or try to cheat to hide imperfections in their command. I suspect that a gpa standard was set by some commander, so then the next commander was forced to equal or better that standard or be evalled as a loser or failure. This pressure gets put on the commanders subordinates who then do “whatever it takes” to meet the new, improbable or impossible standard.
As an enlisted guy, I went through Naval Nuclear Power School back in the 1980’s. While I wanted to be the smartest, I obviously wasn’t and I failed some tests. But there was no thought or idea then for either me to cheat or for the instructors to cheat for or about my failings. I had heard of Nuke School classes where a very small percent passed, but I also heard of classes of where a large percentage passed.
That being said, I can recall a clash of cultures, in regards to tests, when I was on my boat (submarine, to the uninitiated). On my boat, our weekly Nuke training involved tests at the end, but up to a time, those tests were basically “group” tests. Some people did them all by them selves but most worked with others to get the basic answers down. THEN one day, we got a new first class on board, who was on his first sea going command. He was a hot runner at prototype and was a staff pick up. Anyway, on his first Nuke training lecture, he proctored the exam (meaning he made everyone take the exam individually) and many of us failed. He made a stink about this to the Engineer since this general topic had been covered just a few months prior and the average grade was like 90%. Many of us “failures” were questioned as to if we had cheated. Luckily some chiefs stepped in and explained the culture on the boat prior to his arrival and that they were more concerned about people being most knowledgible in there watch standing duties and being proficient in that, rather then trying to be mr. 4.0 in ALL engineering knowledge.
