The Birth of the American City-state: Socialist big cities vs. the conservative countrysides.
American Thinker ^ | 02/16/2014 | Greg Penglis

Posted on 02/16/2014 3:46:08 PM PST by SeekAndFind

Mark Levin has proposed a series of "Liberty Amendments" to the Constitution through an Article 5 state convention. I have my own set of amendments which I hope to share here and add to the proposed Liberty Amendments. The first involves the resurrection of the city-state. This plan would take our largest cities, governed primarily by socialist Democrats, and separate them out as independent, self-governing, self-funding political units, with no connection to the states, but within the exclusive oversight of the federal government, just as the states are.

There is a huge separation in this country right now between the socialist big cities and the conservative countrysides. Many times, especially in California where I live, the socialist cities have enough people, and votes, to edge out the conservative countryside in every major state and federal election, despite the fact that the countryside constitutes a vastly larger area, and includes millions of people. Conservatives within that vast area are completely disenfranchised from true representation, even up to the president.

If you took San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles out of the state of California, and left the rest of the state alone to govern itself, the world of electoral politics, and every other issue, would completely change. Therefore I propose that cities over a certain size and metropolitan character be designated as city-states, that their legislators and officers be recalled from the state governments, that the city-states have no connection or ties with the surrounding states, that no person residing in a city-state may hold any government position in a state, and vice-versa, that crossing a city-state line is the equivalent of crossing a state line, and that the city-states become completely independent political, legal, and financial entities.

I’m surprised the author did not San Diego include in the mix...

Would each city state get two senators?

If they are no longer a part of California, can we cut off their water supply?

The real benefit to the city-state system is that all the folks who are not in a city-state would regain their ideological representation.

Thank the 1964 Reynolds v. Sims Scotus court decision for turning every state into a democratic republic.

Actually the more effective slogan than "one man, one vote," was the infamous "cows don't vote!" Don't you remember all those "Impeach Earl Warren" bumperstickers? 1964 was the year I came to CA and I saw those stickers all across the western US on my way out here!!!

Carry_Okie is the FReeper that seems to me has done the most extensive research on this issue I call "taxation and regulation with no rational rural representation!!!" Doesn't that have a little bit of a Tea Party "ring" to it???

It’s a darn shame that impeachment and removal from office have fallen away. A few judicial scalps a year would do wonders.

I hope the author isn't serious. It's silly and wildly unrealistic. Goofy plans like that one only distract from Mark Levin's very sensible suggestions.

A Constitutional Convention would open Pandora’s Box. The takers would take over and things would only get worse.

I am no longer interested in coexistence as the left has made it absolutely crystal clear that they are not interested in coexistence.

This ‘plan’ is DOA.

Not as much as it used to be.

2012 results - 52.7% Obummer and 45.1% Romney - and those numbers are for the entire county of San Diego. The City will be much more liberal.

Nifty concept; terrible idea. Will he include the corridors between them too? He'll never draw the boundaries in a workable fashion.

No, a better idea is to return the States to the principles of Federalism, with a State Senator representing the county government as selected by boards of supervisors, and the State legislatures selecting US Senators. That way a good idea has a much better chance of making Federal law, an able politician will more quickly be elevated to national rank, and US Senators will not need to raise so much cash for their re-elections.

I found Levin's proposals completely inadequate. They addressed some of the more peripheral issues with the Constitution without rectifying some of its deeper original flaws. He did not address the manner of treaty ratification, nor the language of the Supremacy clause which fails to assure that treaties which usurp Constitutional limitation are rendered void. He does nothing to assure that usurpation of power carries criminal penalties for officers of the government. Yet the latter is the principal reason why the Feds have gone so far beyond Article II enumerated powers while the treaty power has been the principal "authority" for enactment of those powers.

How about simply using the Commerce Clause in the way it was intended and crush the permitting, licensing and zoning nonsense that interferes with free trade between the states?

After we take back Congress you begin to reduce the benefits for not working and increase the benefits of working. Blame unemployment where it belongs - bad regulatory and tax policy enforced by Democrats.
