The Ballad of Laverne and Flint - Guy Clark

This song immediately came to mind and I stumbled on this you tube version, probably the early '70's. This version is a live living room acoustic and of remarkable clarity and sound, considering the age.

“Red Sails in the Sunset”. I don’t recall who the singer was but remember it from when I was a kid in the 50s I think.

Wonderful thread...many thanks..

First, a little background intro, if I may..For those who may not be aware, the Proms concerts in England goes back some 120 years. They've been broadcast throughout the Empire ever since radio was invented. The "Last Night of the Proms" is something that hopefully you'll get to experience live. I was there in 1972. I'd just been discharged from Landstuhl, and went to spend a few weeks with some friends in England before returning home. Lord knows how they managed the tickets. I never asked.. I'd never heard of The Proms, either..when they first mentioned it, I thought it was a dance at their alma mater....and my friends took me to Victoria and Albert Hall for "The Last Night." The audience is as much a part of the event as the orchestra..you'll see/hear

One of the pieces that has been performed for almost a century is "Fantasia on British Sea Songs."

Here's a very nice video, from 2007

Just watch, listen (crack up the volume) and enjoy. It's 15 minutes..it really gets moving about the 7 minute mark..and at the end "Rule Britannia" will send chills down your spine.

Hope you enjoy it..

Here's a bonus, if you'll allow me. Traditionally, the last piece at the Last Night is Parry's "Jerusalem." This performance is from the 2006 concert, and again, the audience is the real star.

To my amazement, when I got home I found out that the concert had been recorded..and released. I think I wore out about 3 LPs over the years, before they finally re-released it on a CD. IMHO, it's by far the best of the many recordings of the Proms over the years, and well worth getting if you enjoy it.

The Captain and the Kid - Jimmy Buffett

A tribute to his grandfather, one of Buffett's deeper songs from his early years.
