It's a lot of data, and virtually all of it, virtually always, indicates normal operation. There is no Internet service up in the air, except via satellite. That is pretty expensive, compared to ground installations, because the antenna is mounted on a moving vehicle, and it has to track the satellite. It's not exactly trivial.
There are radio reporting systems (on Airbus) that use HF, as I understand; that's how the crash of a Brazilian flight was investigated. The amount of data that you can reliably send over a weak HF link in arbitrary propagation conditions is measured in tens of bytes per minute. That's why only abbreviated alarm codes are sent this way, and only when there is an alarm.
I really hate flying. Years ago I had a career that required me to travel from NYC to London several times a year. During my last flight , the plane hit some turbulence, dropped feet, turned off the lights, and for a minute I was convinced I was going to die.

Sun went down there about an hour ago. Don’t even know if the search area has any type of fishing grounds or minor shipping routes.
From what I can gather, most fishing and sea lanes in that area are coastal.

Looks to be a large area of 50 to 60 meter depth. Problem is that the bottom is covered in deep silt. The wreckage could be fragmented and covered. If that is the case, I hope the emergency beacons can transmit effectively.
Anyone remember this crash? If it weren’t for witnesses, the wreckage may never have been found. Once discovered, alligators presented a recovery danger to the investigators and had been feeding on the dead.

In that sea, it is difficult to find an area with nobody around. That is why I am surprised that nobody saw anything coming down. It is not right on the S’pore-Laem Chabang lane, but rather near it, and there is some traffic between Songkhla and Vung Tau.
There are thousands of fishing boats out there. I worked there a lot clearing out fish traps (boo-boos) in preparartion for seismic shoots. The Thai and Viet fishermen hate each other passionately, and both push the line, as they are not sure exactly where the sea border is. There might not be a lot of activity now, in early March, as the NE monsoon still makes the weather a bit snotty.
I am thinking that the aircraft went down in small pieces, establishing a huge debris field.

There is no clarification on where the official is from(I assume Vietnam) and no further elaboration on the ‘rubbish’.
It’s now dark over there. Malaysian Airlines has stated, “The sea mission will continue while the air mission will recommence at daylight.”

Don’t sound like they have too much confidence in finding survivors as nighttime would be the best conditions to see a flare or emergency strobe from the air.

I’d say you are probably right about that.
I do wonder if ASW radar is ever used in these situations, and if it’s at all effective. Figure if they can pinpoint a submarine periscope, they might be able to locate any intact large sections of a plane if it’s somehow still afloat.
Maybe somehow the Air Marshal was getting threatening texts and the pilot got poisoned ; and there was bomb or even worse snakes on the plane.

I think that’s the clue - no distress calls, no radio contact. There one minute, gone the next. Something so sudden that the plane was gone before anyone could make any contact.
How sad.
