Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps: The Unsung Hero of the Gay Rights Movement
FrontPage Mag ^ | 03/19/2014 | Daniel Greenfield

If there is one man who can be credited for the success of the gay rights movement, it’s Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps.

Phelps did more than anyone to make opposition to homosexuality seem as toxic as possible by picketing the funerals of soldiers with anti-gay slogans. There probably wasn’t a more inspired way to make anti-gay sentiments seem as unacceptable as possible.

If the Phelps clan had deliberately set out to implement gay marriage in America, they could not have chosen a better method and who is to say that they didn’t.

The Phelps, with their background in civil rights lawsuits and ties to the Gore campaign, weren’t really anti-gay. They were and are willing to do anything to get attention. They were trolls before the word had become common internet parlance. They understood that negative attention could be monetized, literally through lawsuits, and more indirectly through recruitment.

The protests of the Westboro Baptist Church were cartoon efforts at extracting maximum outrage. The people they trolled helped pay their bills.

Fred Phelps began by monetizing civil rights legislation and ended by cashing in as the default villain of a culture of perpetual outrage. If Fred Phelps should be known for anything, it should be as the man who did more than anyone else to promote gay rights in America.

There are apparently two stories. The one you’re reading supposedly came from tweets from one of his daughters (replete with mis-spellings, I might add). It turns out that this was a hoax, and the Twitter account that wasn’t authentic.

I think they say he was a registered Democrat

He was a state Democrat party official. This church is another Dem creation, just like the KKK. I'm convinced it was created to try to create a backlash against Christians.

That’s a total surprise to me, I never considered the idea Westboro was a legitimate church.

I guess the Westboro Baptists never hear about “grace”.

And a lifelong Democrat.

I’ve wondered if he was on the payroll of the gay lobby. He’s the best asset they’ve had.

I stated on another thread that I had heard verbally that Dees and the SPLC secretly financed WBC. However I have not seen anything “on paper” to back that up although it sure seems possible.

BTW, if y’all ever see media darling Dees on the tube try turning off the sound and look real close at his face. That is one creepy weirdo.

There are fake Twitter accounts for several famous or semi-famous people, made for various reasons, most of which aren’t very good.

While it could be that the story you speak of is true, there are several people who are actively debunking that story. The sad truth is that we may never know all the details.

Suffice it to say that if his daughters really are showing that much hatred towards their own father, there’s only one place they could have learned it from: the father himself.

It’s sure tempting to take it for a farce.

They’ve never ever “dared” to show up where they could be half useful, like a “gay pride” event. It’s like they just want to taunt America. It has Satan written all over its soul, IMHO.

“I’ve wondered if he was on the payroll of the gay lobby.”

That is a very astute question and one that would undoubtedly prove to be answered in the affirmative.

Therefore, Westboro and the Gay Lobby are in fact likely guilty of Conspiracy to Defraud, Racketeering and guilty of any number of RICO violations.

They should all be investigated, prosecuted, sued in civil court and all state and federal legislative, executive orders and court decisions that were advanced by this Conspiracy should be repealed.

Without a doubt - every time those scumbags open their mouths, we lose more of the “mushy middle”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICB0diy1X6k

I checked out this video of him speaking.
He really comes off like a professional speaker even a pastor. He’s speaking at a liberal Christian university I suppose with a cross in the background. Probably Methodist - I just checked it it. The leadership of that denomination seem to like all things Anti-Biblical and Anti-Christian.

Morris Dees is a false prophet as far as I’m concerned.
I recall seeing a bio about them in the early 90’s and the organization was really just a couple of Christian hating lawyer’s working out of their house / office and able to garner a lot of support from liberal causes and all facets of American society. But still just a couple of people that somehow get to act as professional adjudicators as to what is acceptable in the public realm or in America when it comes to all religious and social issues. Only in a world gone insane. The comments on that you tube video say in some papers about Dees divorce that his ex-wife has some horrible things about him I won’t repeat - see for yourself.

I wouldn’t be surprised if SPLC supported WBC however probably the same groups - money from foundations or some government agency that might want to remain anonymous could easily find some surreptitious way to support WBC.
