Historians claim to have recovered Holy Grail
The New York Post ^ | March 31, 2014 | Bob Fredericks

Spanish historians say they have discovered what Monty Python could not – the Holy Grail, the legendary cup Jesus supposedly drank from at the Last Supper.

The Spaniards – Margarita Torres and José Ortega del Río – believe the 2,000-year-old vessel is in a church in León in northern Spain.

The pair spent three years studying the history of the chalice and last week published a book, “The Kings of the Grail,” making their case.

The onyx chalice, they explained, was concealed within another antique vessel known as the Chalice of Doña Urruca, which is located in León’s basilica of Saint Isidore.

The historians said it has been there since the 11th century.

“This is a very important discovery because it helps solve a big puzzle,” Torres told The Irish Times. “We believe this could be start of a wonderful stage of research.”

She said the duo had been researching the history of some Islamic remains in the Saint Isidore basilica. But their discovery of two medieval Egyptian documents that mentioned the chalice of Christ caused them to change direction, the paper reported.

Those parchments told a tale of how Muslims took the sacred cup from the Christian community in Jerusalem to Cairo....

First, this is doubtful.
Second, this comes out on Apr. 1.
Third, it doesn’t matter, even if it is the real thing. The chances of that are slim to none.

I thought it was in Valencia cathedral. There’s a whole book about it’s history. Quite intriguing.

It doesn’t look like the sort of table setting that would have been used under the circumstances. I’d expect something a bit more down-to-earth.

Valencia is going to contest this “finding”. They claim to have the Holy Grail in the Cathedral. I saw it in the dark room where they have it on display. Naturally, nobody gets too close.

BTW, is Doña Urruca the same person portrayed as the king’s sister in El Cid.

Oh sure, a couple of Spaniards found the Holy Grail.... And it just happens to be found in.... Spain.

Yeah, right.

I think that’s the idea. People’s curiosity is aroused and they buy the book.

Well the Knights Templar never disbanded in Spain. They were a key element in the “Reconquista”. They only changed their name to “the Order of Christ”. They survive to this day as a charitable organization

My thoughts, as well. It's awfully ornate and appears to have inset gemstones. Given what we know about Jesus, it doesn't seem his style.

The probability of the son of a carpenter using an onyx chalice seem rather small. As in the “Indiana Jones” movie, Jesus probably used a common wooden or pottery cup, which means it’s likely been dust for a long time.

I don’t believe the story, either, but the piece that they claim is the actual chalice is, apparently, encased in the ornate one:

The onyx chalice, they explained, was concealed within another antique vessel known as the Chalice of Doña Urruca, which is located in León’s basilica of Saint Isidore.

Spot on. The chalice, if it could be called that, was just an ordinary drinking cup. Likely long cracked and gone.

Actually, Jews used cups carved from stone for religious events, such as a Passover meal.

RTFA. The 'chalice' is the black & brown onyx object. All the gold and jewel crap is the typical "gilding of the lily" embellishment with which one object-reverencing sector of Christianity is renowned for defacing historic treasures and sites...

I suppose this could be genuine, but the gold and jewels would have had to have been added. I'd love to see the complete provenance for it.
