Police searched a West Bluff house Tuesday and seized phones and computers in an effort to unmask the author of a parody Twitter account that purported to be Mayor Jim Ardis.

The account — known as @Peoriamayor on the popular social media service that limits entries to 140 characters — already had been suspended for several weeks when up to seven plainclothes police officers executed a search warrant about 5:20 p.m. at 1220 N. University St.

Three people at the home were taken to the Peoria Police Department for questioning. Two other residents were picked up at their places of employment and taken to the station, as well.

The warrent alleged the crime of impersonating a public official. But Illinois law makes impersonating a public official a crime only if it was done for material gain. That's clearly not the case here.

The real reason for the raid: A citizen dared to mock a public official. It's just lucky for the citizen that he wasn't wearing an Obama mask when the raid occurred.

Then he would have faced federal as well as state charges.

There was a time when such a move by a politician would be met with outrage.

I hope the civil trial ruins the SOB.

Wow!

One would think that being the mayor of Peoria was enough reason to hate your life. Now you have some domestic terrorists lampooning you on some social networking site.

This may require the national guard being called out...

When you see Reid attack Bundy’s family and friends and woman and children are threatened by Federal shock troops— then the Mayor says (despite the constitution)”I can do that too!!!” Pretty clear to me as our governance slips further in the despotism.

It wasn’t just “mocking a public official.” The twitter account originally pretended to be the actual mayor.

but, although the twitter stuff didn’t play well in Peoria, it might play very weIl in the court room where the Mayor and the city of Peoria are sued to the high heavens.

So Tina Fey can be arrested for pretending to be the governor of Alaska?

More of Obama’s Brown Shirt squad at work. Not only should the mayor be impeached over this but also the stupid judge who signed the search warrant. Neither one has ever heard of the 1st Amendment. Apparently it doesn’t “Play in Peoria”.

Correct. But that is not a crime in Illinois! And the mayor and especially the judge had to have known that. So why then was there a raid? The mayor was angry that he was being mocked. No other reason.

Maybe he should've been. I don't recall anyone getting their home raided and arrested for wearing an Obama mask.

It's stuff like this that makes me appreciate having a powerful ACLU.
