Jerrod Dooley

Candy, the dog

RAINS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A former Rains County deputy retained a Dallas attorney on Friday. Jerrod Dooley was fired by Rains County on Thursday after he shot a dog while responding to a burglary call on April 18.

"[The] dog shooting in Rains County this week [was] an unfortunate situation," said Peter Schulte, Dooley's attorney. "Deputy Dooley retained me today to share his side... I ask that everyone keep an open mind about the Rains County incident. It's a horrible situation but I do believe the shooting is justified."

Rains County Sheriff David Traylor said he received a message on Friday by someone claiming to be Dooley's attorney. The Rains County attorney advised the sheriff not to return the call and to forward further calls to the county attorney.

According to the Rains County Sheriff's Office, Dooley was fired for his own safety because of threats. Sheriff David Traylor added that it is the safest move for the department and the deputy.

"That was a decision I know means saying at this point he is guilty of a criminal offense, but it is being investigated toward the criminal side right now," Traylor said.

Homeowner Cole Middleton arrived home around 11 a.m. and discovered his home had been burglarized. Middleton said his guns, iPad and his wife's jewelry had been taken. Middleton called 911 at 12:46 p.m. At 2:41 p.m., Dooley arrived at the home.

Middleton said when Dooley arrived to investigate, he claimed the dog was about to bite him and shot the dog to defend himself.

The homeowner says the dog was shot in the head. He begged the deputy to finish off his cowdog, named Candy, since the dog was suffering.“I was so upset. I went over there to her and she was still alive and I begged and pleaded with him to please shoot her again because I don’t have any firearms. They got stolen. He went and got in his vehicle and backed out of my driveway,” Middleton explained.

Middleton had trained Candy to be a cow dog, and he says his dog was a natural.“And then I had to do the unthinkable, the otherwise unthinkable. I had to kill my dog with my bare hands and put her out of her suffering, praying for this to be over with,” Middleton said.

The Middleton family says the necropsy report by a veterinarian proves that Candy was shot in the back of the head.

Right.

How in tarnation do people that spend their entire careers going door to door, yard to yard on a DAILY basis ever survive without shooting dogs? Like postal workers, UPS etc...

It’s all total BS, not to mention many of these dangerous LEO pet shootings occur in neighborhoods, full of people, kids etc...

Another way of looking at this....

If you invited me onto your property and then your dog threatens me..

Yeah. It’s game on.

As a matter of fact they may not pack a gun, but most carry dog mace.

Since cops routinaly shoot pets and dogs, why are not all cops required to carry mace?

BTW, mace etc will not kill some innocent neighborhood kid 5 houses away.

I look at stories like this through the eyes of what would happen to a private citizen
if they reacted in the same way the law enforcement officer did.

There are just way too many instances of shooting of dogs and citizens because
the law enforcement officer claims they “felt threatened” in some way.

That “cell phone, toy gun, wii controller, walking cane, or whatever sure looked like a gun to me”.
Bullshit.

Why do cops shoot dogs?
Because they can.

I hope this idiot cop catches a bullet in the back of his head and someone leaves him to suffer.

Good a reasonable question.

When an aggressive dog is “maced,” you only have one chance to get to safety. The dog mace is only a distraction that allow YOU a chance to retreat.

That is true. However, dogs’ genes are set to investigate possible threats, bark furiously, and try to scare off intruders. So, unless the dog is extremely well trained, don’t take the risk of losing a canine friend.

You might be a bit slow, but once again, how in tarnation do people that spend their entire careers going door to door, yard to yard on a DAILY basis ever survive without shooting dogs to death? Like postal workers, UPS etc...

The deputy had plenty of time to get back in his car when he saw that the dog was becoming agitated.

All he needed to do is get back in his car and have the dispatcher call the homeowner to come and control his dog. No need to shoot the dog when he has shelter a few steps away.

BINGO!

And if dogs are so damn deadly to LEO’s, where they literally open up in neighborhoods full of people, why are not postal workers, UPS and Fed Ex types, who go into yards many times PER DAY, not given firearms?

On the San Antonio news night before last, they showed the vid of the deputy, and cohorts on camera. It seemed they were laughing about the dog being shot.

Mr. Dooley needs to move far away from Texas. He is no longer welcome in Rains County .

Cops shoot dogs. It’s what they do.

They shoot them her in Meridian too. Kick them first to get them agitated then bang. See a cop hide you dog cause sometimes the just need to kill something.

“The next time you need to euthanize your pet, just call the cops.”

It’s about time cops who do this sort of thing are “euthanized” by the dog’s owner.

“Mr. Dooley needs to move far away from Texas. He is no longer welcome in Rains County.”

The next “news” I’d like to read is the Dooley has received his just “reward” for this act of extreme cruelty.

Why not get back in the car. Is there some urgent need for him to get out of the car in the first place with a loose dog in plain sight?

Did things work out well for him, the owner or the dog after he got out of the car and waited for the dog to charge him?

Please explain why you think that the deputy needed to rush to the scene of a burglary that was hours old? After all the deputy arrived 2 ½ hours after the call reporting the burglary. So how many hours head start did the criminals already have?

when good citizens start shooting police for killing their dogs, this may change. When the consequences of killing a dog become more than the hazard of being bit, police may be a little bit less prone to just unload on a family pet.
