U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt held a press conference in Kiev on Tuesday, saying that Russian troop movements into Ukraine would constitute a serious escalation and, even further, the U.S. would respond immediately, UPI reports.
He continued, as the Kyiv Post reported, saying that "such a scenario would lead to tragic consequences."
At first glance, this sounds like tough talk. In essence, Pyatt seems to be telling Moscow, "if you invade, U.S. troops will stop you."
And certainly, with 600 U.S. troops already moved into Poland and the Baltic states, things could get ugly.

Before and during WWII, a lot of people sided with the Nazis to get out from under Russian, French, Dutch or British rule. Many* of East Asia's post-war rulers sided with Imperial Japan during the war. They sided with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan for the same reason we sided with pitiless Russian mass murderers - the enemy of my enemy is at least my temporary ally.
* Nationalist China received large amounts of aid from Nazi Germany in its effort to crush the Chinese Communists. It had almost achieved its objective when Imperial Japan invaded, thereby saving Mao Zedong and his henchmen. Indonesia's Sukarno worked with Imperial Japan during the war and used the organizational skills and structures developed during the Japanese occupation to organize the revolt against Dutch rule in the post-war era that finally led to Indonesia's independence. Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew worked for Imperial Japan's propaganda department in what the Japanese renamed Syonan-to.
The fact is, at this point, the US is basically irrelevant to the events in and around Ukraine.
We essentially forfeited any real influence there and across Eastern Europe when Obama decided not to provide missile defense to the region and conceded space flight to the Russians.
Putin was clearly only waiting for the Olympics to be over with to enact a plan that has probably been a decade in the making. And certainly Ukraine is only the first stop on Mr. KGB’s magical mystery tour—the “Back in the USSR” tour, if you will.
In eastern Europe, we’re out, the Sovs are back in.

Remembering history I recall Germany, of that time, and Russia signing a non-aggression pact. Thus siding with the Nazis before WWII did not remove a lot of people from their rulers. Then hitler made an error and attacked Russia violating the non-aggression pact.

that being said, we have our own tyrant regime here in America. we need to concentrate on that, and it is best that zer0 does not waste the truncated military we still have. zer0 has been successful converting the #1 superpower of the world to what is fast becoming a third world cowering rabbit of a nation.

The “scenario” that has lead the US and the world to “such...tragic consequences” is Obama’s election and re-election to the Presidency of this once great nation!
Obama can be blamed for many things.
Putin’s aggression is not one of them. He was going to illegally annex Crimea for its naval yards and connect a land bridge from Russia through E. Ukraine to those naval yards, regardless.

Exactly. Whether or not you support Russia or the Ukraine, the bottom line is the US’s ability to influence events there is zip, zilch, nada.
This while one of the powers behind Obama, George Soros, poured money into the Ukraine to stir chaos and impossible expectations.
One of those impossible expectations was that Russia would walk away from Crimea - when Russia took it from the slave trading Ottoman Empire 250 years ago and has maintained its presence there since. This Russia did even after losing the Crimean War and even (through military treaty) after the collapse of the USSR and Ukrainian independence.

The only reason the US can’t influence Ukraine is because it does not choose to.

Ukraine did nothing to prevent or stop the Russians from using the naval yards in Crimea. There was no geo-strategic reason to annex it.
They have merely won a temporary battle in annexing Crimea. Strategically, Russia is isolating itself as a rogue nation and strengthening NATO, pushing nations into stronger ties with NATO and putting them closer to the Western orbit.
Putin is no chess master, this is an epic disaster for Russia in the long term.

Russia’s naked aggression, annexation and provocation, threatening invasion, is pushing former Warsaw Pact countries closer and closer to the West and NATO orbit.

They, despite some border differences have always been communist/totalitarian to the core and aligned. It’s no big deal. China really can’t strike out. Russia is limited to striking the weak nations that haven’t aligned with NATO.

There is a critical qualifier you left out. “Relative decline”. Both militarily and economically, the US and NATO are light years ahead of both Russia and China. China, due to its immense population is growing but has huge systemic deficiencies for the future.
