Democrats and Republicans both say they want keep the Internet free and open for all. They disagree about who should guard the guards

House Republicans advanced legislation Thursday that they say will keep the Internet open and free from government censorship. Every Democrat on the panel considering the measure opposed it in service, they say, of the same goal.

At issue is a question with profound implications for the future of global communications that delves into the deepest bowels of the Internet, and a version of the age-old question: Who guards the guards?

We paid for it, DARPA designed and developed it, and so we own it. Period.

Come on Republicans, we can do this. Anyone that believes this administration about anything (if you like your doctor, healthcare will be cheaper, etc.) is not living in the present reality. We do not need to give up control in this area.

Yep. Those evil uncaring Republicans.

They just don’t care. And they just won’t share.

IIRC, the last article I read about this said the idea of the US giving this up was being rethought. No link, sorry.

May cooler heads prevail. There is no REASON to give this up.

Don’t give it up. Governments and the UN would love to take control over it. Don’t let them.

I could not agree more. How many times can people be lied to and hoodwinked by this political good cop, bad cop con-job?

Anyone else taking control will definitely result in censorship. He**, I worry about censorship with this crew from the USA in control!

Last two paragraphs of the article:Looking the first paragraph of these two, like I said above, there's no R.E.A.S.O.N to do this. It's a lame brain idea from the Commerce Dept. They are afraid other countries will say nasty things about the US if we don't give this precious resource away. When's the last time you heard anybody complain about the way we're running this?

Typical RATS, this is all about feelings. Haven't you heard? The US is full of racists who want to dominate the Internet!

but the bill actually threatens that goal and plays into the hands of those who want to use the Internet as an instrument of political control rather than preserve it as a global platform for free expression.”

Exactly what the current regieme desires.

Good answer. So many useful idiots have tried revisionist propaganda against that.

Well, let's talk about the real-world implications...

Suppose you spend a fortune building up the web site "NextBigThing.com". Then, one day you find that the domain name has mysteriously been mapped to the IP address of somebody in some other country.

You built up the company, but now someone else has taken it over with a SINGLE KEYSTROKE!

In short...this is H-U-G-E ... it significantly erodes the value of every US-owned web site.
