HEARNE, Texas (AP) The nephew of a 93-year-old Central Texas woman shot and killed by a police officer says his aunt fired two shots before the officer shot her.
Roy Jones told KBTX-TV (http://bit.ly/1izkcTq ) of Bryan and College Station for a story aired Friday that he had taken his aunt Pearlie Golden to renew her driver's license Tuesday, but she was denied after failing her test.
As Jones took his aunt back to her Hearne home, he could tell she was upset by the denial, he said.
Back at her house, Jones said he was sitting with his aunt on her front porch when Golden demanded her keys back. He refused, so Golden went into the house and got her .38-caliber handgun. Jones dashed into the house and called police, he told the station.

“You might not think of a gun, but she was upset and this was a major life milestone.”
I took the keys away from my spouse 3 years ago. Her Dr. wouldn’t do it, Our lawyer insisted. She may very well wanted to kill me for a short time. I didn’t call the cops. She got over it...
A six year old is unlikely to disobey the command of a uniformed adult to put the gun down on the ground.
An angry and slightly demented granny is very likely to do what she damn well pleases and to hell with everyone else.
There is a huge difference between a child who is immature rather than irrational and an aged and demented adult. The former has very little concept or practice at exercising personal autonomy while the latter is very practiced at it and will be highly resistant to being told what to do (like giving up driving).
I don’t know how isolated her home is, but if a 93 year old was firing off rounds in my neighborhood, it would be very unsafe and she would constitute a threat not just to the cop but to people in their homes nearby.
Well see, you had expert knowledge. That’s what I’m saying. How is it going to come out? “Something just told me.” or “Gosh, I had know idea.”
“I dont know how isolated her home is, but if a 93 year old was firing off rounds in my neighborhood, it would be very unsafe and she would constitute a threat not just to the cop but to people in their homes nearby.”
Doesn’t alter anything... Did she fire off rounds because the cop confronted her?
That was awful. I won’t forget that for quite some time, because the fellow was so pathetic. Now in this case, the mob should listen to what her Nephew said happened. They’re looking for any excuse to cast blame and destroy any authority figure. They won’t give up pretending to believe their version of the story for a while. Grandma said “Boy, what did I just say? Give me those damn car keys NOW! That’s a die-rect order!”.
Well, she’s no longer suffering from dementia and her worries about a hip replacement seem trivial now...
At this point in the storey we only know what the media is saying. We do not know accurate details of what happened.
This may have been a “good shoot” which was justified. It may have been a “bad shoot” and not justified. Until all the facts are in, we do not know. The officer may be a good officer or he may be a really bad officer.
The most important thing to know is, at this point we do not know.
>> Most of todays cops will not. I personally think its the training and the type of people they hire
Agreed.
Immunity, pensions, culture, etc. It’s definitely a systematic problem. It seems the result is a force of desensitized automatons.
Possible suicide by cop?
If the son had given her the keys under duress of her threatening him with a gun, she also was likely to have driven the car without being able to pass the exam. Had she killed somebody with the car, the son would have been blamed for aiding and abetting her criminal behavior.
She was responsible for her decisions and her actions. They resulted in her being killed in self defense by those exercising legitimate authority.
Had they not exercised their authority, she might have killed others including herself with the car and her weapon. Armed children and elderly can kill you just as well as a 30 year old soldier. Failing to respect legitimate authority and brandishing deadly force is an accident looking for a place to happen.
—Dozens of protesters, including some who came in from Houston, —
Was one of them named Quanell10?
Bingo!!!
FWIW, "duress" is a valid legal defense. He can't win in the court of public opinion, no matter what he does. He's in a lose-lose situation, on that count. That tends to happen in the bubble surrounding irrational people.
Roy Jones, having been called all sorts of names, in the original postings of this news item, has gone into ‘cya’ mode.
“Uh, she started shooting at me!”
Well, really nice, now that she is not around to dispute your statement, jerk!
A 93 year old woman, who by all descriptions, has been completely independent for all of those years, suddenly has that freedom taken away, by failing a portion of a driver’s test.
Now, this young man, is demanding the very symbol of her lost freedom, the car keys.
As to the gun, her late husband was a local cop, according to other news stories I’ve read.
How would you feel, if you had to surrender your car keys, forever?
You never “get used to it”
Had she waved the gun inside DMV then I’d say good on her...
“I personally think its the training and the type of people they hire.”
It’s the degradation of the Culture. Most cpos of 50 years ago would regard todays cops as un-American flaming pussies.
Give her the keys, call the cops and report an unlicensed driver as soon as she gets behind the wheel.
Well, as long as she FELT bad, I guess firing off a few rounds is OK. Please accord everyone the same pass.
