(CNN) -- Vermont's governor on Thursday signed a bill into law that will require the labeling of genetically modified foods -- hailing it as the first such law in the nation.
Under the new law, food offered for retail sale that is entirely or partially produced with genetic engineering must be labeled as such by July 2016.
"Vermonters take our food and how it is produced seriously, and we believe we have a right to know what's in the food we buy," said Gov. Peter Shumlin. "More than 60 countries have already restricted or labeled these foods, and now one state -- Vermont -- will also ensure that we know what's in the food we buy and serve our families."
In the absence of federal action, other states have introduced similar legislation or ballot initiatives, according to the non-profit Center for Food Safety.
Maine and Connecticut passed laws requiring labeling, but they won't go into effect until other states pass GMO-labeling laws. Vermont is the first to pass a "no strings attached" bill, the watchdog group said.
Supporters of the law expect it will be challenged in court.
"I can make no predictions or promises about how the courts will ultimately rule but I can promise that my office will mount a vigorous and zealous defense of the law that has so much support from Vermont consumers," said Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell.
The governor tweeted: "Those opposed will put up a fight. Help us fight back."

There are a lot of dog food buyers who used to feel that way.
Hey it makes no difference whats in the box right? Heck if they mix poison in as a filler for infant formula its no skin off your back.
No I can’t say I have. Doesn’t seem to have helped you.
Unless you consume a few pounds of tuna daily it doesn’t matter.
Futile much?

oooohhh good one, you are so smart. yep indeed
And a year ago we had less. You sound like a climate change alarmist.
Right—but my point is that if they put that warning on every product, it would be of zero use to the highly allergic.
You’re just ignorant on the subject and not much of a doc if you think there’s no difference between selective breeding and modern GMO.
I don’t read labels.
Just Saying.
That's what happens with laws like this. They don't accomplish what is desired, and have unintended consequences.

You’re off on absurd tangents. Basic information doesn’t require anyone to do, or not do anything.
The organic label requires all sorts of other criteria to be met. But I imagine you knew that, since it sounds like you’re part of the destruction of our food supply.
I think you have this 180 degrees out of phase. I see you as the good little subject. By the way, I think your user name will probably be available on Democratic Underground. The Mansato meme is straight out of their talking points. Have fun over there - I think you will find 100% agreement with all of your GMO hysteria.
I suspect you know DU quite well.
I really don’t feel as nasty about this as my last post to you sounded. It is somewhat funny how two people can see things from totally different sides. This is one of those agree to disagree moments - I am sure we probably agree on many issues outside this one.
Yes - “know your enemy” :)
I’m not a fan of govt or govt regulation but you cannot ignore what is happening. The big multi-nationals are twisting govt regulations to favor themselves and punish the small local producer. The people must speak out or we will be ignored as the laws are created.
They seek total control of the food supply. A socialist/communist goal which has been used numerous times in recent history to control populations and kill the undesirables.
The GMO they are doing now in labs is dangerous. Govt regulations sure aren’t going to keep them from accidentally releasing some diseased or mutant strain of grain or wildlife. A combination of regs and laws might when combined with consumer demand.
Like I said, we just don’t agree on this. I think the conspiracy aspect of this is overblown and the science on the impact of GMO has both good and potentially bad elements that are not the same for every product.
I smell lawyers. What happens when a small local food company labels their food as non-GMO and it happens to have some through no fault of their own? The liability will put them out of business.
“I think the conspiracy aspect of this is overblown”
They’ve made it illegal to possess non-registered seeds in Europe. The process of registering a seed is time consuming and expensive so only the big companies will be able to comply.
Here in the US they are seeking to regulate backyard gardens and have sent swat teams to raid producers of local products.
So where is the conspiracy?
Thanks for the ping!
