By the time the US entered the war, Russia was legendary for being the place where German soldiers knew that they would not be allowed to live as hostages. They would be killed and in very painful ways. In fairness to Russia, Russia did in many ways drain the energy of the German military. Hitler made the same mistakes, but Russia took one of the biggest hits of WWII. If not the biggest hit.

They treated prisoners and civilians far worse, in the main, than either the Axis or Allied powers ever did. If you want proof, read any detailed history of that period.
