Incubation for MERS to develop after transmission was reported to be two weeks (May 10th) . . .

***** The first two cases of MERS involved health care workers who contracted the disease while in Saudi Arabia. Both also reportedly were in the US visiting family. Both used commercial modes of transit, potentially exposing many travelers. Given the reported incubation period . . .the next several days may become very interesting.

“The unnamed man reports good health after having close contact with the first patient on two occasions in Indiana, but did not seek medical attention following the discovery.

I wonder how many people this lamebrain infected since he decided not to seek medical attention.

No no no. No connection whatever. Don't you dare think that. Don't you dare say that.

Silently among us: Scientists worry about milder cases of MERS

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Scientists leading the fight against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome say the next critical front will be understanding how the virus behaves in people with milder infections, who may be spreading the illness without being aware they have it.

Establishing that may be critical to stopping the spread of MERS, which emerged in the Middle East in 2012 and has so far infected more than 500 patients in Saudi Arabia alone. It kills about 30 percent of those who are infected.

There may be “superspreaders”, like SARS.

The scary reason Saudi farmers are kissing camels despite MERS warnings *****

Note: MERS involves both respiratory difficulties as well as gastric distress (vomit & diarrhea). There are certain cultures that either are not familiar with Western toilets, or manage to enforce dhimmitude to accomodate their preferences.

Over the last decade or so of reading of the cultural impact to Western nations,. . .toileting habits/preferences is just one of the unsavory & disturbing issues.

There are prior reports about the condition of local toilets because certain cultures would wash their feet in public restroom sinks . . .as well as stand on the toilet seat to squat to defecate/urinate.

second case (indiana fellow) also took multiple modes of transportation to Munster Indiana (suburb of Chicago area). Patient number one left from Jeddah, Saudi. Patient number two left from Riyadh, Saudi.

(patient two) left Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on April 24 and took two planes and a bus to travel back to Indiana via London and Chicago.

The patient in Florida felt unwell during a flight from Jeddah to London on May 1 and reported symptoms of fever, chills and a slight cough. The patient was eventually hospitalized on May 9.

Terrible reporting...

This patient in Florida potentially infected 20 other hospital workers who are all in quarantine for 14 days...

I think two are known to be infected...

Did you see this...

It is becoming increasingly clear that people can be infected with MERS without developing severe respiratory disease, said Dr David Swerdlow, who heads the MERS response team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“You don’t have to be in the intensive care unit with pneumonia to have a case of MERS,” Swerdlow told Reuters. “We assume they are less infectious (to others), but we don’t know.”

...

“Asymptomatic carriers of diseases can represent a major route for a pathogen to spread,” said Dr Amesh Adalja of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

“Just think of Typhoid Mary,” he said

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

The MERS victims should be convinced by whatever means to go to Washington D.C. and meet with as many Senators, Congressmen and “Executives” as they can. Coughing and sneezing while visiting is to be encouraged. Amnesty granters should receive the consequences of their stupidity. They visited evils on us with their “let everybody in” now let them suffer. I no longer feel pity!

The real question that needs to be asked is why Obama has not mentioned this, nor has he put any travel restrictions on Mid east MERS infected countries as far as entering the US.

Once again, he isn’t doing his job. I say it is because he wants Americans to contract the virus.
