She is tossed into this women's prison with all sorts of weird characters, including this guy who gave up his wife and son for this so-called "sexual re-assignment surgery." (He ended up being convicted of stealing money that he used to pay for his surgery.) In the series, he is the stereotypical female impersonator, calling everybody "honey" and obsessed with styling hair and fashioning feminine sandals to wear from materials he collects from around the prison.
Anyway, female impersonators have always been around. It's only recently that they have been championed as "heros" and "role models" and as a result, we now have mentally deranged parents who are feminizing their little boys in order to appear stylish and "with it." I think that is really sick and is child abuse. It's one thing for an adult man to pretend at being a woman - that doesn't bother me. After all, women have been allowed to dress as boys for years now. But when you bring children into the mix, that's just wrong. If my mother had me wear dresses and heels when I was five years old, I'd think I was a girl too. The parents who do this to their children are no different then child abusers in my opinion.

since gender roles are a “social construct”, what would it mean to be transgendered in a Leftist Utopia? They spend an awful lot of time telling us that men and women are the same, but then turn around and claim that some people are in the wrong bodies. Maybe they have an answer for that apparent contradiction, but I’ve never even heard it attempted.

There are in fact a few syndromes that could be considered "in betweens" But they are very, very rare and are rightly called by science, abnormalities. What the trans-multi-omni gender folks want us to do is to see all this as normal. At the very least they are statistical anomalies and it is highly unlikely that this individual has any of those.
I suppose it would be an insult to point out that those abnormalities also have a high incidence of seriously reduced IQ. Just saying...
Klinefelter has XXY. Jacobs has XYY. There are XXX and single X females.
The XYY super male is found in prison populations at a higher incidence than the general population.

With respect, I'm not sure that this is an argument against "sex change" operations - there are plenty of people with genuine diseases who would be in similar trouble; e.g., type I diabetics, or mental ill patients who require antipsychotic medications to function in society.
(Please understand: I am NOT advocating for the atrocity known as gender reassignment. I am only saying that the above argument against it may not be the strongest.)
