How Conservatives Missed The Chance To Replace Cantor With One Of Their Own
Breitbart Big Government ^ | June 12, 2014 | Jonathan Strong

That was fast.

In a commanding display of sheer political power, GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy locked up support over 48 hours to replace the vacancy at Majority Leader left by Eric Cantor's stunning primary defeat.

House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) abruptly dropped out late Thursday, saying “the measures necessary to run a successful campaign would have created unnecessary and painful division within our party.”

Although Sessions made a spirited effort to run to McCarthy's right by seizing on the immigration issue, McCarthy's biggest risks came from more conservative lawmakers that didn't enter the race: namely House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX).

The episode has left conservatives on and off the Hill deeply frustrated that they had missed what is likely the best chance they'll ever get to remake the leadership team.

“Shame on all of us. Here's the conservative movement, and we were all asleep at the switch. We did not galvanize behind a guy, or a person, and we waited until the die was cast. If conservatives are going to do more than throwing mud in people's eyes, if we're going to actually win some battles, then we damn well better get on our game,” one conservative lawmaker said.

RE :”Most conservatives aren't willing to make the compromises that would be necessary to hold a leadership position.”

Of course if they took over that wouldn't be the issue,

Plus, that's (above) not a good argument for doing nothing.

One could make the same exact case about being POTUS.

If there is a lesson for this then it’s that the conservative wing has to start its planning well in advance and identify its leadership. McCarthy has been running for the leaders spot since he won the whip poisition, and he’s been doing favors and building up support since then. Now that the opportunity presented itself, he was ready for it and the Tea Party members were not.

I believe the Sessions move was a fraud, designed to forestall other, real conservatve, candidates from stepping up.

Doubtful. By all accounts the two men detest each other. I don't see Sessions doing anything to help McCarthy. He really wanted the job but recognized early on that McCarthy was twelve steps ahead of him when it came to lining up votes.

We can toss several bad apples and keep a majority in the house. The current leadership is openly hostile to conservatives.

Or we can continue to vote for people openly hostile to our way of life. How is that working out for you?

Maybe, maybe not. But from what I’ve been reading and hearing, there is a strong enough conservative faction in the House that actually CAN derail Boehner’s speakership, if they choose. Up to this point, they’ve been pleaded with by the GOP establishment to unify behind Boehner “for the good of the party” but I’m reading reports that House conservatives are growing increasingly restless and weary with supporting him.

Bottome line... We need to turn up the pressure and keep contacting our House GOP representatives to support a stronger, more conservative Speaker.

"... Hensarling cited his young children – he's known for being conscientious about setting aside time with the family – in declining to run."

If so, here's a case of a good man not seeing the forest for the trees. I don't mean to beat on Hensarling for making such a choice but by leaving the RINOs in place what kind of country is he going to leave to the kids he loves?

We tried that in 2010, after the Teanami wave. You see where that got us.

Quite simply, we are outnumbered and don’t have a real Leader. Oh we have some people I like, and some people that are loud, but that does NOT make them a leader.

So really the Brat victory has no national meaning. People are still for Boehner (and HRC too), even in VA.

Well, maybe Hensarling should just stay home, curl up with his kids, listen to the country collapsing around him and tell them about how the US used to be. This episode shows how few in Congress are really willing to fight the good fight. The solution for what is killing the country is unlikely to ever come from a Congress that has grown too comfortable with speachifying and being part of the elite who grow fat on the past wealth of the US built by people who were giants compared to the termites of today.

Except the difference between 2010 and today is that Boehner has now amassed a proven track record of pure, utter ineffectiveness and incompetence (though back then most of us on Free Republic were smart enough to predict this). Many conservative/Tea Party members of Congress were reluctantly willing to give Boehner a fair shake in 2010 and 2012 at the urging of the party leadership. But from what I’m hearing and reading about reports behind-the-scenes, the increasingly conservative wing of the House is growing weary and tired of Boehner. With the country undoubtedly going up in flames, hopefully they’re figuring out that we either take steps to change the hell-bound trajectory of the country NOW or we’re only going to continue to further doom ourselves into the abyss of statism and imperialism.

I seriously doubt this was his real reason. More than likely, he was threatened with committee assignments. This seems to be more important to the critters than actually serving the electorate. Yep, those wonderful, blessed committee assignments that the elite hold over their heads. Maybe the rules of assignments should be changed, but I doubt that will ever happen.

I agree, we can afford to lose a few bad apples and pick up some good ones as well. If I lived in weenie Boehner’s district, I would vote for the DEM and then repent afterwards.

That is the idea I wanted to discuss. Just four or five starting with the Weeper of the House. Freepers could quickly decide which ones.

This might send a message the republicans will understand.

Conservatives need to plan past tomorrow if they want to change anything. You can bet GOPe had their battle plan in place long before Cantor lost.

VA is not the Virginia of old....too many in the area around DC beholding to the cess pool up there.

The Brat victory I am afraid was as much a problem with Cantor becoming too disengaged with his constituency then with going with a conservative. I applaud they sent that message and hopefully others will get the message. Another principal concern was Canter had the temerity to try to take away the primary election path in his district i.e. party conventions. Furthermore, he had become the face of child illegal amnesty. In fact, I think Bonehead may have actually pulled the rug out from under him by sending him to attend a meeting in Florida about that issue. (My group picketed about their meeting). Bonehead of course backed out so now he has the good fortune to have Cantor out and a person more in line with his ideals in MaCarthy. Too bad the voters in Ohio did not follow suit and unseat the pinnacle problem!
