How Conservatives Missed The Chance To Replace Cantor With One Of Their Own
Breitbart Big Government ^ | June 12, 2014 | Jonathan Strong

That was fast.

In a commanding display of sheer political power, GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy locked up support over 48 hours to replace the vacancy at Majority Leader left by Eric Cantor's stunning primary defeat.

House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) abruptly dropped out late Thursday, saying “the measures necessary to run a successful campaign would have created unnecessary and painful division within our party.”

Although Sessions made a spirited effort to run to McCarthy's right by seizing on the immigration issue, McCarthy's biggest risks came from more conservative lawmakers that didn't enter the race: namely House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX).

The episode has left conservatives on and off the Hill deeply frustrated that they had missed what is likely the best chance they'll ever get to remake the leadership team.

“Shame on all of us. Here's the conservative movement, and we were all asleep at the switch. We did not galvanize behind a guy, or a person, and we waited until the die was cast. If conservatives are going to do more than throwing mud in people's eyes, if we're going to actually win some battles, then we damn well better get on our game,” one conservative lawmaker said.

Brent Bozell, the chairman of ForAmerica, said he didn't want to criticize Hensarling or Jordan for their decisions, but he was nonetheless exasperated that out of dozens of conservatives, none was willing to step up to the plate.

“So many chest thumpers. Where are they now?” Bozell said. “There's a real question as to whether a member of congress has the right to complain to anybody about anything leadership does if they don't challenge them.”

This is why Boehner stacked the leadership chain of command (including the committee chairmen) with moderates, to avoid what happened in the late 80’s when Gingrich became whip and was then thrust into the Speakership when Michael retired and the republicans took the House.

They assured themselves that a moderate will always be in charge. But the Whip race is important. We need a conservative Whip to undermine Boehner and McCarthy if necessary, or to whip conservative votes against liberal policy.

I believe the Sessions move was a fraud, designed to forestall other, real conservatve, candidates from stepping up.

In my opinion, the real battle should take place after the November midterm elections when the time comes to nominate a new House Speaker and get rid of Boehner. I think House Conservatives are wise their powder dry until then.

Agreed... I think the House Speaker and Majority Whip are two highly influential posts for which conservatives can and should fight.

You are correct, we just exchanged a dime for 10 pennies. Bonehead is free to continue his reign of emptyness of ideas backed up by a like minded majority leader. He fights the conservatives harder than he does the dems.

Heard something on one of early talkstream shows that Henserling is being considered as SOTH.

I beg to differ, the same bunch which elected Bonehead the first time will do it again.

Make that a nickel, McCarthy is twice as liberal as Cantor!

Good points.
I been saying the exact same thing about Boenher’s speaker position since late 2012.(the Bush tax cut extension)

December 2012 I started challenging freepers who were posting ‘replace him’ to call up their favorite house member and tell them to make the case for themselves being speaker instead, but none of them wanted it and there was no real opposition to Bohner being speaker again(I didn't hear Rush, Levin or Hannity calling for any specific individuals to do it either) .

The attitude by many is ‘We don't need leaders, we just need complainers’, and we got a wealth of those.

If McCarthy lost he would still be Whip.
Boehner would still be Speaker.

A conservative can do nothing to help in that case, the Senate RINOs would continue running the House Leadership.

I stand correctd on my anology! Thanks, I think, for reminding me of that info.

The only good news is the end is getting much closer to when they turn out the lights as the party is indeed over here.

We will be lucky if we still have a country by November.

Most conservatives aren't willing to make the compromises that would be necessary to hold a leadership position.

For instance:

Hensarling – followed by former Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Jordan – received what the conservative lawmaker described as a “full court press” as colleagues pleaded with him to run.

In conversations with allies, Hensarling cited his young children – he's known for being conscientious about setting aside time with the family – in declining to run.

We can fix this in November. Vote for the democrat running against these evil bastards. The conservative movement is dead unless we rid the world of progressive republicans.

Or we can continue to vote for "republicans" who hate us over and over while hoping for different results.

The supposed conservatives let us down when they approved Boehner as Speaker for this session. They let us down again.

I tried to warn people yesterday that there was only 2 choices to pick from, Sessions and McCarthy, and was shouted down because Pete Sessions ‘isn’t conservative enough, and is all icky and stuff’.

That wasn’t the freaking question! Those were the only real choices, and McCarthy is a freaking liberal 5X worse than Sessions!

As bad as he is, Pete Sessions would have been an improvement over Cantor.
