The South Carolina legislature has rankled liberal groups after requiring that a pair of public schools use state funds to teach the U.S. Constitution and other founding documents -- on the heels of a budget fight over gay-themed books in the curriculum.
State House lawmakers previously had cut funds from two public universities in retaliation for required-reading material containing homosexual themes. A revised budget passed by both the House and the Senate earlier this month, though, restored the money -- but dictated that exact amount be spent "for instruction in the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Federalist Papers, including the study of and devotion to American institutions and ideals."
The bill restored at least $52,000 for the College of Charleston, and at least $17,000 for USC-Upstate, which were the original amounts cut back in March. The legislation also says that any school that conducts a mandatory reading program must provide an alternative in case the chosen book conflicts with any students’ moral or religious beliefs.
Gov. Nikki Haley went along with the Constitution requirement on Thursday, saying she did not agree with it but kept it in because lawmakers spent so much time on the bill. She said her office "didn't want to interject ourselves into that."
"I don't believe legislators should micromanage our boards," she said, according to The Associated Press. "They elect board members, so if they want to beat up on them, go for it... but to go in there and micromanage books being read, I think that's out of our purview."

Maybe if teachers are told they can lie about the 2nd amendment they won’t feel so bad about having to teach the constitution. And, of course, the 10th amendment, too. Can’t tell the kiddies about gun rights and limited government. Might shock them too much.
There needs to be a separation, a divorce, from these marxist bastards. It’ll never happen, but the country needs to be split up. Marxism cannot coexist with the rest of us who want to live in a free republic.
Marxists don’t want to “coexist” nor do they want you to be able to live in a free republic...they demand only that you kneel or die.

Teaching the Constitution is teaching the Bill of Rights and that includes the Second Amendment.
So I think that is a small victory overall for SC. Yes, she could throw it out and veto it, but then some nut job gets involved and no decent provision gets passed. If... they can teach the Constitution then they can talk about Limited Government and other issues over riding the requirement included.
The church should have kept its role as the educator of children. Turning that over to the government was a terrible mistake. Those who adopted Germany as a model should have seen the evil results of state-run education.

I find nothing queer about teaching the U.S. Constitution to students so that they will understand the basis for our constitutional republic and the relationship between government and the people, at whose pleasure it serves.
Better yet - our neighborhood churches are perfectly equipped to also serve, week days, as schools.
They have classrooms/kitchens/rest rooms - and 'assembly hall' - Kids could walk to school, for the most part - and know all the kids - parents would have a hands on oversight.
They don't have to be RUN by the churches - just rent the space during the week day, when they are otherwise, mostly empty.
When we had the little 'one room' school houses, kids were given a REAL education. My brother and I went to one - until our 5th and 7th grades when we moved to the Boston area and big schools. (This was decades ago) We were a FULL YEAR ahead, academically, and they skipped ua a grade.
PARENTS have got to get on the stick. Take back the education of their kids. Get together in your neighborhoods and start a neighborhood school.
They could also be integrated with home schooling - where, say, home-schoolers could go a couple times a week to study a subject that might be a bit difficult for the parents to teach - also, to be a part of extra curricular activities, filed trips etc.
It could be so easily done - Instead of fighting the fed-education behemoth, use the energy/money/time to set up neighborhood schools. (Maybe give up watching one program a week - like 'Survivor" or "Dancing with the Stars" - and use that time for your kids - instead of moaning and groaning about what they're being exposed to in public schools. TAKE THEM OUT and do what used to be done - the close knit neighborhood schools - when kids graduated 8th grade with the level of education that our high school grads - if lucky - now have.
Parents - get off your kiesters.

Our founding documents should be taught fom 1st grade through 8th grade. 9th through 12th should be western civilization.
Gay, womyn’s and any minority studies program should be a college elective and not a major.
I wish they would provide a course in “Socialist, National Socialist, Islamist and Authoritarian Regimes, and Racial and Religious Genocides in Africa, Asia and Europe in the 20th Century”.
It could incorporate keywords like “neo-Nazi”, “neo-communist”, “socialist-anarchist”, “Wahhabi”, “Salafi”, “Socialist International”, “antisemitism”, “anti-Christian”, and especially “useful idiots”.
Would it not be interesting if a high school graduation requirement were to be to pass the US Citizenship Exam? Even more amusing, make it a requirement at the college level as well! No Federal Funds for any “Higher Education” institution that fails to have that requirment for diploma.

I’m confused. Every single Government class I took, or of which I am aware, teaches the Constitution. American history classes teach the Constitution. My kids and grand kids talk to me about ... the Constitution and what they learned about it in school from grammar school to college. Why on Earth would you pass a law that says “teach the Constitution”. What exactly qualifies? Furthermore, even our own Courts can’t agree on Constitutional interpretation for over 200 years. “Teach the Constitution” or “read the Constitution” are ludicrous statements. It’s not a recipe for chocolate chip cookies.
I, of course, think that teaching the Constitution should be fundamental to any American education ... but it sure seems to be and this seems no more than a stunt. I hate stunts. They have a way of backfiring and never make good law.
We need better standards for ‘teachers’... Right now the ‘standard’ is if you flunk out of every other major you’re accepted into ‘education’...
