With just over a week to go before the nationally-watched run-off election in Mississippi June 24, signs strongly point to defeat for 36-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran, his state's first Republican senator since Reconstruction and possibly the next chairman of the all-powerful Senate Appropriations Committee if the GOP take control of the Senate this fall.
According to two just-completed polls, Cochran trails conservative State Sen. and tea party favorite Chris McDaniel, who made headlines nationwide when he outpolled the veteran senator in the initial primary last month.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax last week, McDaniel, 41, predicted flatly that "I will defeat Thad Cochran." The people of Mississippi, he told us, "are conservative and we led in the primary because we took our message to them. They were energized and motivated to turn out then, and they will be even more energized and motivated to vote on June 24."

Careful Chris; you and your supporters would do well not to get over confident. If Haley “Boss Hog” Barbour succeeds in getting a lot of Black Democrats to the polling place to repay ol’ Thad for past favors, this could be close. Also, if all of Thad’s supporter vote for the Dem in November to punish you..... who knows? Don’t get cocky and don’t get over confident.
I've been told here on FR that only conservative purists do something like that. Certainly the GOP-E wouldn't sabotage a candidate in the general election, would they? (cough)

McD supporters must not be overconfident; I am not sure he will be nominated but surely hope so. The worse candidate usually prevails among the American people.
I’m not sure how this runoff works. Isn’t it ONLY people who voted in the Republican primary the first time round who are allowed to actually go?
In that case, surely its just about Cochran turning out Democrats who ALREADY voted for him, and the couple of people who voted for the third guy? He can’t just get a boatload of Democrats who didn’t vote in the Republican primary to come out for him, can he?

Nothing odd about that, it’s called STRATEGIC THINKING. Bloomberg knows that both will be against gun control, but Cockran will also be for AMNESTY, and that if he gets that (which is highly unlikely now, thank you Cantor), then gun control or any other Democrat dream will be a piece of cake, in a country that is, at least, 60/40 Democrat.
It would sure be nice if REPUBLICANS could also start to think a bit past the big money and the next election.

Do not...DO NOT...underestimate the GOPe's ability to pull something out of their hat. Their backs are against the wall, they've invested a lot on Cochran, they're going to say and try and do anything to win.
If they voted in the first Democrat primary then they can't. If they didn't vote at all in the first primary then they can vote in this one regardless of party affiliation.
No. Only people who voted in the first Republican primary OR people who did not vote in either the Republican or Democrat primary can vote in the runoff. They do have to have been registered voters before the primary and that's true regardless of party registration. The only registered voters who can't win in the Republican runoff are those who voted in the Democrat primary. Link
Ah, I see. Still, Cochran is in real trouble
I don't disagree at all. But still I can't see the GOPe going away quietly into the night and it scares me. McDaniel can't get cocky. He needs to run like he's five points behind at all times. He needs his base to turn out big time to overcome the crossover vote. This isn't over. Not by a long shot.
I can't understand how this would work for Cochran. If I'm a Democrat and the Republicans say to me, "Come vote in our primary for the guy who is going to beat your candidate in November," I wouldn't do it. If anything, I would vote for the weaker Republican candidate.
So what is Barbour saying, "Come you Democrats and vote for Cochran because he'll lose the general election"? I just don't see it.

You’re STILL confused over that aren’t you USS Alaska? The exact opposite, of what you said is true. Anyone, Republican or Democrat, who did NOT vote in the first Primary of either Party, CAN vote in the runoff. Any Democrat who voted in the Democrat Primary canNOT vote in the run-off. 85,000 people voted in the Dem Primary. They’re the only ones who can’t vote in the run-off.
In reply to your Post #17: MS is one of the most Republican States in the nation. Everyone knows that the Dem will not win in November. So, what the Cochran campaign is saying is: “You Dems know that the Democrat is not going to win in November. So, come on out to the GOP run-off and vote for ol’ Thad. You know he’s the one that’s keeping all that Federal money coming in from the govmint so you can keep getting your free goodies”.
I’m not sure how this runoff works.
