Immigration reform moves to states; New York eyes citizenship after 3 years of taxes

The frustration with Washington's inaction on any type of immigration reform has forced proponents to shift their attention to states such as New York where a new plan was offered Monday to grant citizenship and voting rights after an illegal immigrant pays three years of taxes.

The Washington-based Center for Popular Democracy said the New York legislative effort to provide citizenship benefits to three million immigrants is the result of the fallout of congressional gridlock and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's defeat last week, which pundits blamed on his support for reform.

SNIP

The New York legislation, titled “New York is Home Act,” sets requirements for immigrants to meet before they can apply for citizenship with New York's Office for New Americans, created by Gov. Andrew Cuomo:

• Proof of identity.

• Proof of three years of New York state residency.

• Proof of three years of New York state tax payments.

• Commitment to abide by New York laws and uphold the state constitution.

• A willingness to serve on New York juries and to continue to pay state taxes.

In return, said Friedman's group in a release, immigrants would get New York state citizenship, financial aid for higher education, health care, drivers' licenses, professional licenses, the right to vote, the right to run for office, and protection against racial profiling.

“This bill is about New York state doing everything it can to promote the full equality of immigrants. State powers, though, are very different than federal powers, so the package of opportunities and benefits are different from any federal bill,” said Friedman, whose group is promoting similar plans in other states.

Sounds like these idiots are confusing “residency” with citizenship. I believe only the federal government can make that call.

All of which will be waived if they are on the government dole.

Can you be the citizen of a state, but not a citizen of the USA?

Can I ask a stupid question???

Is it even possible to be a “citizen” of a state? I thought we were American “citizens” and “residents” of whatever state we live in.

I have the same stupid question. They can't give them voting rights for federal elections (rep, sen, pres)....that cannot be legal.

This is insane.

It is all an effort to boost Rat rolls through extra constitutional means.

Yeah, you have a point. I am still trying to believe in an America that is a nation of laws and governed by the Constitution and reasonable men.

It sure is getting harder and harder to do that.

How can someone here illegally legally submit an income tax return? They are admitting to breaking US laws by working. And what are they going to use for identification? A stolen SSN or forged taxpayer ID number?

This is in clear violation of the Constitution.
Naturally, there will be no prosecution by the current ‘justice’ department.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH

Yeah right!!! Illegals are going to start paying taxes and abiding by state laws so they can vote and get their names on a government list? They vote anyway without any responsibilities of being a citizen. I’d love that deal.

There’s no Earned Income Tax Credit in New York State income tax. They tax every dollar, starting with the very first one.

All they have to do is ask the IRS. The IRS will give them an ITIN whether they are a citizen or not. Look it up. Of course they don’t pay. They get back more than they paid in or they wouldn’t use the ITIN.

“When my sister did taxes for H&R Block she said illegals would file taxes. When she asked why one of them said, “To establish that I was here and paying taxes. One day that will make me a citizen.”

A friend of mine worked with illegals, and they had taxes taken from their paychecks (I don’t know how they handled the Social Security number issue). They told him the government left them alone as long as they paid taxes.

Huh? How can a STATE government grant UNITED STATES citizenship to a person?

Oh well, it's New York. New York is that state that, like Illinois, does not provide for the replacement of a LT. Governor. The state Court of Appeals (State Supreme Court equivalent) ruled that "Who cares? Screw the dusty old state constitution, we can make this up as we go along, whatever's politically expedient for the democrat party is cool."

So OF COURSE they can grant US citizenship, ban guns, ban large cup sizes of soft drinks, whatever the hell they want.

No one is above the law, EXCEPT the politicians.

Foolish are the people who keep voting for them.

RE :”Huh? How can a STATE government grant UNITED STATES citizenship to a person?”

Read a little closer, its says NY State citizenship of which there is no such thing:

In return, said Friedman's group in a release, immigrants would get New York state citizenship, financial aid for higher education, health care, drivers’ licenses, professional licenses, the right to vote, the right to run for office, and protection against racial profiling. ‘

Of the above 'the right to vote' gets my attention.

Pardon me, but this hypocrisy has gone way over the edge.

There is no way NY state can do this after what SCOTUS told my state of AZ.

Supreme Court Blocks Key Provisions of Arizona Law, Affirming Broad Federal Power over Immigration

June 25, 2012

the Supreme Court voted 5-3, mostly siding with the Obama Administration to affirm its broad powers and unambiguously ruling that Arizona can’t make immigration laws that supersede existing federal statutes.
............
In a majority opinion authored by swing vote Anthony Kennedy, who was joined by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts and liberals Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Ginsburg, the court held that federal law pre-empted three of the four main tenets of SB 1070. Arizona cannot make living there without documentation a state crime with its own penalties, even though it’s already a violation of federal statute, Kennedy wrote. “
