DC Defines Pepper Spray as a Firearm
Townhall ^ | Aug 04, 2014 | Crystal Wright

Just when I thought the District of Columbia government couldn’t stoop to new lows of incompetence and non-sensical behavior, it does. Apparently, self-defense spray is defined as a firearm in DC and must be registered by its owner with the Metropolitan Police Department. I kid you not! You heard me correctly. The DC Police wants to make it even more difficult for people, especially women, in a town where it’s tortuous to purchase a gun to use in self-defense.

Recently, US District Judge Frederick J. Schulling Jr. ruled DC’s ban on people carrying guns in public was unconstitutional. Yet, DC lawmakers and the Police department demonstrate a tenacity for trying to make it onerous for residents to legally defend themselves against maniacs.

How did I stumble upon this little gem of lunacy? My neighbor who lives in DC has an 18-year old daughter who decided it was probably a good idea that she carried some pepper spray to defend herself in the city and when she heads off to college in South Carolina later this month. She explained to me when she went to buy the pepper spray at the Ace Hardware store in the Tenley Town neighborhood of DC, the sales clerk handed her the “The District of Columbia Self-Defense Spray Registration Form” which is part of the Gun Control and Firearms Registration.

To say that she and her mother were perplexed and stunned by the request was an understatement. The law requires a person be a minimum of 18 years old or older to own self-defense sprays because I guess it wouldn’t make any sense to allow teenagers to defend themselves against predators and the like.

DC banned mace/pepper spray for years, ostensibly because criminals were using it to help mug people.

Criminals, being criminals, didn’t let it’s unavailability in the District deter them, they just started using the small bottles of EZOff oven cleaner.

DC ultimately reversed the ban (although put in registration restrictions, apparantly) under the auspices that it was better to lose a wallet or purse than a wallet or purse AND eyesight.

DC ‘government’ is firmly in the hands of the melanin enhanced “Where da white girls” persons.

That being a given, then to protect their own, said persons would make every effort to render their victims helpless.

As I said, they don’t want normal, non-violent people to defend themselves, but instead deliberately and intentionally leave guns in the hands of violent criminals.

These articles are worth a look. The author of the first one endorses Fox pepper spray, so take it with a grain of salt. The second one seems to be solid neutral advice.

The Myth of Wasp Spray

Does Bear Spray or Wasp Spray work for Self-Defense?

I absolutely agree with getting pepper spray for humans if that’s what you’re worried about & using bear spray for bears. However, if some place like DC won’t let you get human spray so you can defend yourself AND they don’t give you a registration form for bear spray (I have no idea what the situation is regarding purchasing bear spray - I’m speculating), then I’ll take my chances with bear spray. 2.5 million per 3 million ..... I’m thinking a fog of pepper spray is going to be better than nothing & I’ve heard from credible folks that it will put a man down if they get a face full.

As for the wasp/hornet spray, it’s nasty stuff but I haven’t heard of it being used in lieu of pepper spray. I’d never use it. The ultimate irony is that some female somewhere is going to use it on an attacker, survive somehow, and get sued by the attacker for using it on them. The way this world is upside down these days, I have no doubt it’s just a matter of time.

I engage in an activity where we occasionally (couple of times in the late summer months) disturb ‘ground bee’ nests (also called yellow jackets). We use the wasp/hornet spray to knock the nests out from a distance because the bees are really, really mad & you can’t get very close at that point. The only problem is that the bees away from the nests gallivanting around the countryside are some kind of pi$$ed off when they come back to the nest & find it destroyed! The spray smells terrible and you definitely want to avoid breathing any fumes.

I had a sobering experience of that reality when I helped my daughter move into the Georgetown campus.
Two weeks prior a student couple returning to campus just before midnight, within the campus "housing area" experienced a DC rape and murders. Not far from a world class restaurant.

This was 1993, and all indications are that it is now much worse.

People need to stop visiting these places. If you cannot defend your own life or that of your family, no tourist attraction will lure me in. Period.

New York City does that too, based on what I last heard. There are like 3 pharmacies that will sell it, and then only after you fill out the paper.
