FAA Takes Issue with Stadium Flyovers
Flying Magazine ^ | November 24, 2014 | Stephen Pope

Remember that record flyover of 49 Van's RVs at last season's Chiefs-Raiders game in Kansas City? The FAA remembers too. In the wake of that sanctioned overflight, some pilots of Experimental-category airplanes are now receiving letters of investigation from the agency for other flights that may have run afoul of regulations.

Do you seriously believe that Obama is directly involved in this FAA decision?

I will never look at that page again. I boycott any page that forces me to watch an ad.

As a private pilot I actually agree (one of the few times I agree with the FAA on matters of general aviation). First they are talking about experimental class air craft which haven’t undergone the full rigorous airworthiness testing as production craft. Second, they are talking about pilots who may have less flight time and surely less time flying in formation than military pilots. And third, flying over a stadium with 80k+ attendees seems like a risk no matter the class or skill level.

If you want to see general aviation rights be set back even more than they have been in the past 15 years wait until one of these planes takes out a few thousand people in a crash.

Rules violated:

1. Stadium TFR (Temporary Flight Restrictions) Not below 3,000 feet within 3nm of any stadium with an event in progress.

2. FAR 91.319(c): Operating an experimental aircraft over a densely populated area.

When the experimental and sport pilots wanted a little more leniency it was like giving a liberal an inch and watching them try to park an aircraft carrier in it.

Agree. There are good reasons they don’t let them fly directly over the crowd at airshows.

This does not cover current military planes. Only private experimental ones.

Regarding FAA and stadium flyovers, I don’t see anything about flyovers in Congress’s constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers.

What am I overlooking?

Section 8.

Keeping someone from dropping a homebuilt plane on my head at a football game is looking out for my general welfare.

"The Congress shall have Power To ... provide for the ... general Welfare of the United States"

Yes that is the meaning of “General Welfare”, not paying people to sit on their ass.

This is a left wing, anti-military thing. Air Force Football has had no issues for decades with fly-overs with the best jets...trust me
