North Charleston, S.C. A white police officer in South Carolina is charged with murder after a bystander recorded video of him shooting and killing an apparently unarmed black man in the back as he ran way from the scene of a traffic stop.
The New York Times posted the video Tuesday. It is disturbing. (Scroll down to see video.)
Officer Michael T. Slager, 33, claimed he feared for his life because the man took a stun gun during a scuffle Saturday, but the video does not confirm that.
The video shows Slager firing eight times and shooting Walter L. Scott, 50, in the back as Scott loped away across a grassy lot.
Scott was driving a Mercedes-Benz and had been stopped by Slager for a broken tail light, according to police reports cited in the Times story.
At the time, Scott was wanted for arrest on a Family Court warrant, Charleston County sheriffs Maj. Eric Watson said Tuesday. (Source: The Post and Courier)
The police reports said Slager fired his Taser at Scott, and Scott turned to run away from the guns electrical current, which could be seen extending from his body.
Oh noes! what is our hero going to do now?
Looks like a good shoot to me, after all, you want the officer to go home to his family at night doen't you, and of course, we don't know the whole story, and police have to make instantaneous life and death decisions, and he followed departmental guidelines, etc.
The cop screwed up. He should have checked for witnesses after the event and confiscated the evidence (which of course would "go missing"
He was merely exercising one of the perks of police work i.e. getting away with murder. It's too late to do the favorite cover up when there is lots of evidence and that is putting it before a grand jury. The prosecutor controls what a grand jury sees, and the prosecutor can "indict a ham sandwitch" or let Atilla the Hun go. This is the technique that was used to let the swat cops who tossed a grenade into a toddler's playpen off the hook. Lots of high fiving after that.
Looks like murder.
Moving on.
He’s been charged with murder. If he gets away with this, there should be some rioting.
This police officer is cooked.
If there was no video taken, no way the officer gets charged. No. Way.
Hope he gets thrown in prison for a long time.
The person recording the whole thing was very brave. They got really close to the cops,I expected one of them to draw down on him at any moment.
You run, you get shot....... that should be the rule of law
With the ‘new’ generation of police there are more instances of resorting to the firearm first before other non-lethal means.
The prosecutor is correct in charging this officer.
Many of today’s problems in police departments can be traced to lowered hiring standards and recruitment of persons unfit to be officers.
Forget the /s ?
Yeah! And recording them too - you should be shot for that, and for looking at them sideways that's surely a shooting offense, and of course just because. That's a good reason for a cop to kill someone. Sieg Heil!
Depends on the situation. This one looks like murder to me.
Unfortunately every moron in the country is rubbing themselves raw over this when its really no more worthy of national news than any other murder case.
Just wondering how many of my tax dollars went toward that Mercedes.
Sure does. Looks like after he cuffed the dying man he went back to where he was standing and picked up something (a gun/knife) and came back to the body and dropped (that’s called a throwdown, BTW).
It was outright murder of a man running away with nothing in his hands. EIGHT, count them, EIGHT shots in the back.
I think they would have had they noticed him. By the time the supervisor and EMTs arrived on scene it was too late for them to do anything.
I expected them to do something like confiscate the video. I guess they were so thrilled and excited at their kill they still had tunnel vision. You can rest assured that in the future cops will learn from this and be a lot more diligent about searching out potential witnesses and destroying incriminating evidence after they murder someone.
These guys get scarier and scarier every day. Makes you wonder what the /_=/^ they got away with before cell cameras and videos.
How many of your tax dollars went towards the cop who murdered the man?
WTH???
Did you forget a sarcasm tag on that? Or do you honestly think that resisting arrest is a capital offense?
And that would be why police do not like people filming their activities.
Not true. Cops literally get away with murder whenever they want, and it's always the same crap "He made a threatening gesture." "I was afraid for my life." etc. Well this time the lie was exposed, and the video went out to too many places to cover it up. I especially like where the cop walks back, picks up something and goes and drops it by the dying man.
