Importantly, during the HUAC investigations that unveiled many communist infiltrators in the US government, investigators used a trick to find out if someone was a hard core fanatic. The trick works on any kind of fanatic.
Fanatics have a very limited, strictly controlled world-view. And anything they cannot fit in this world-view they discard as irrelevant. They are exceptionally closed minded.
Ordinary people, however, have a much larger and more flexible world-view. And they likewise get information that is irrational and cannot be justified. But they do not discard it offhand. Instead they use the defensive mechanism of spontaneous laughter.
Fanatics do not have this defensive mechanism.
So among many other things, when a HUAC investigator was interviewing a suspected communist, they would tell them a silly, irrational joke. A communist not only wouldn’t laugh spontaneously at it, *they couldn’t*. Any laughter they could produce was always forced.
Suddenly, today we find ourselves surrounded by leftist, politically correct fanatics. Social Justice Warriors (SJWs), Eco-nuts, PETA types, you name it.
Even liberals and leftists who are not fanatics see the fanatics as humorless, pedantic and intolerant. Humor is utterly lost on them.

Exactly right! I escaped Mexifornia and after dealing with many liberals there, the one thing they all have in common is thinking they are smarter than everyone else. So they think if you are not a liberal, you just haven’t been lectured to enough. They will always be trying to sway you, since you are just not smart enough to understand what they are saying.
Sadly, our nearest neighbor is a liberal Yankee. (I’m not sure which offends the locals here more, LOL!) I actually got yelled at during a hike because we quit work to avoid paying taxes and I was explaining how hubby would pay in over $100,000 into social security if he worked until 67 (his portion only!) and only receive $40,000 more if he lived until 83. She was mad he quit, LOL! I think she was actually mire mad we could chose to work and make a lit more money than she could.
So, no more hikes with her. Once I know someone is a bossy liberal, I know they will never quit with the snaky comments and outright lectures. And I moved here to get away from them!
