Democrats unsure Hillary Clinton can beat Donald Trump in general election

Democratic Party activists are conflicted over whether Hillary Clinton can take on Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump in the general election, with some fearing she provides too much ammunition for the flamboyant businessman's style of attack.

While Mr. Trump is leading the national polls and calling the shots in what's become a circuslike GOP primary season, Mrs. Clinton tops a sedentary Democratic race with two other opponents respectfully nipping at her without doing much damage -- and party stalwarts are happy to have it that way. "I hear a lot of people saying, 'You know, I've watched the Democratic debates and the Republican debates, and they're so different. I'm sure glad I'm on the Democratic side and they're talking about the issues. They don't always agree with one another, but they explain why,'" said David Allen, a Democratic Party leader in Barnstead, New Hampshire. "Democrats have resolved themselves to not go into a circus and tear one another down."

But Mr. Allen said he does worry about how the eventual Democratic nominee will stand up to the sort of withering barbs Mr. Trump has dished out to his own side.

....

Other activists say there's a sense that, while it's Mrs. Clinton's turn to run, there's no swell of on-the-ground enthusiasm for her to carry the party's banner into the general election.

And well they should worry.

I think she’s toast. Something to really celebrate.

By “Democrats” and “activists” you mean mainstream media, right?

She's my choice for D nominee. No cult of personality.

Yeah, Hillary’s worn out and just does not have the charisma
that Obama had in 2008.

some fearing she provides too much ammunition for the flamboyant businessman's style of attack.

The difference in Trump's "style of attack" is that HE ATTACKS.

We know exactly what a McCain, Romney, or Dole would have done. We know that even GW Bush wouldn't defend himself if a gunman had a gun to Laura's head, so we know that Jeb would pee his pants.

They are all weak. They wouldn't attack. And the democrats realize Trump will attack.

Trump is going to run her into the ground. We should start an over and under for which month she collapses and is brought to the hospital.

I know that cult of personality remark about Hillary was actually a dig intended for Trump supporters, and there is no point even answering you and yours any more, because you just do not get it at all. You would rather Jeb Bush, because without Trump that is exactly what would happen, without Trump tearing things apart. The point I want to make here is that Hillary is the cult-of-personality candidate in this election. All she has going for her is that she is a women, a novelty, and liberal feminist types of all persuasions and the very young, especially women, will vote for her for that reason.

They are’t sure she can beat anyone. Credit due Trump for bringing up the old Bill/Hill sex complex.

The fact of the matter is that she is vulnerable against any one not named Bush.

Don’t buy the false media narrative that she is invincible.

I’m a Cruz supporter but I believe that Trump would beat her.

The woman can’t speak, she’s ridiculous in debates, has a long track record of corruption, and was probably the worst Secretary of State in the country’s history, and they’re only “unsure”? No, they’re a lot more than unsure. Her only hope is to use the media to tear apart her opposition, and they’re afraid they won’t be able to do that with Trump in particular. We have come to this: “electable” for Republicans means “able to withstand negative campaigning, not in the media, but by the media”.

If the other side can see that she can’t stand up to Trump then her run for office is over...who else can they prop up? Bernie??? Trump can take him down, Bernie’s a Communist; Mark O’Malley? What has he got to offer? One question from Trump and Mark would be laying on the debate floor in shattered pieces....

And it’s to late to put someone else in there, they already have met deadlines on primary dates, so that’s out of the question...

Excellent point! I encounter very few people under 30 who have not drank the Bernie Sanders Kool-Aid.

Not to worry, Hillary.

Not only are the democrats backing you, but the Republican establishment is there helping you, too.

Don’t forget to reward them when you get to the White House. Paul Ryan and McConnell and Bush will be there to help you finish the fundamental change of America, and also turn it into a Third World Latina slum.

Remember, Hillary doesn’t have “the strength or the stamina” to be President.

(I heard that somewhere!)

It is just not Hillary’s worry. It also is a worry for Cruz, Rubio, Carson, Bush, Christie, Kasich, Paul, Fiorino, etc. that they can not beat Trump either. They never had to confront a non-career politician before, who has decades long experience dealing with media, and is fearless because he is NOT IN THE POCKETS OF HIS RICH DONORS.
