Ted Cruz has surged to a statistical tie with Donald Trump among Republicans in California, while Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina have tumbled in this late-voting state, according to a new poll.

The Field Poll, released Tuesday, reflects Cruz’s momentum nationally in the crowded Republican presidential field. While the Texas senator lags behind Trump in New Hampshire and national polls, he has pushed ahead in Iowa, which holds its first-in-the-nation caucuses on Feb. 1. Sacramento

Cruz, a favorite of evangelicals and tea party conservatives, is the first choice of 25 percent of likely Republican voters in California, according to the poll. Trump stands at 23 percent, while Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is running third at 13 percent.

The theory was that the crowded field would help Jeb. Now it’s helping Trump. My hunch is the majority of people supporting Rubes, Carson, etc. will be Cruz supporters.

Two of the 10 Republicans in California switched.

Not really. But, Field is all over the map. Large number of candidates helping Cruz at this point, but not for long. However, while I as always do not discount any poll, I think this is a real lagger. I don’t buy that Cruz gained 19 points since the last Field poll. But there was another CA poll that isn’t listed on RCP-—much more recent. I’m sure with a little search you can find it. Trump was up big.

I repeat, I do not discount any poll. However, if you look at this previous poll-—last one from Field taken a couple of months ago, Cruz has leaped more than 19 points. Not really feasible. It’s also way out of synch with the last poll from CA I saw, but there is no more recent poll that I cannot find out of CA about 3 weeks ago. It’s not listed on RCP-—in fact, nothing since that really old Field poll is listed there.

From this other article about the same thing:

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Cruz-surges-to-top-in-California-GOP-poll-6736449.php

While Cruz's 25 to 23 percent lead over the billionaire businessman is a statistical tie, the freshman senator's position is stronger since plenty of California Republicans are scared to death of seeing Trump as their party's nominee.

In a state where 28 percent of likely Republican voters say they'd be “upset" if Trump was on the ballot come November, “Trump doesn't have much room for growth," said Mark DiCamillo, the poll's director. “He has his support, but there's an upper limit."

Either way, if this was good news for Trump it would be ALL CAPS ON THE SIDEBAR FOR THREE DAYS.

Really? You’ll know something after IA? Because if Cruz wins, he gets . . . 10-12 delegates. And if Trump comes in second he gets . . . 8 or so delegates. Then, four weeks after that, Trump has about 250 delegates. And Cruz has . . . 20-30. And four weeks after that, Trump will have about 800 or so delegates using current proportions based on polls.

If Cruz wins Iowa, is it at all possible that the momentum of the race changes in most states? I guess that can’t happen? Oh well, everybody should just go home because it’s all over now...Trump has it sewn up! Haha!

Obviously, you don’t live in CA or you would know better. Check the voting by county and you will see that there are more Republicans in CA than you think. Ask the ones here on FR.

Yes, but the Democrats have so dominated CA for so long that any long-range prospects for conservatives seem bleak.

Rubios’ supporters will not go to Cruz. Bad blood between Rubio and Cruz. I see Jeb getting the lion share of them. Carsons’ supporters most likely will go to Cruz, not all but a lot of them, Trump will get some of them too. The Rats will carry Cali so who cares about Cali anyway?
