NEW YORK (AP) - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer wants to require the Federal Aviation Administration to establish seat-size standards for commercial airlines, which he says now force passengers to sit on planes "like sardines."
The New York Democrat told The Associated Press the airlines have been slowly cutting down legroom and seat width.
"One of the most vexing things when you travel on an airplane is there's almost no legroom on your standard flight," Schumer said. "There's been constant shrinkage by the airlines."
He said he will add an amendment to the FAA Reauthorization Bill that is pending before Congress that would require the agency to set the seat-size guidelines. Schumer planned to formally announce the proposal at a news conference Sunday.

Somehow, I think that Chucky hasn’t ever sat in an airline economy seat in DECADES.
Three flights on an Airbus 319 last month.
Horrible. Just horrible.
Yes.
Another commie Marxist Senator heard from. When did the RAT Party go so far left off the cliff? Did this all start in the 1960’s Viet Nam era?
Why don’t we just turn everything to the government? Get it over with in one swoop.
It’s Sunday, so Chuckie must have found a camera again....
If only every day was the Sabbath, this little RAT wouldn’t be thinking of a way to regulate something the government has no business regulating.
Start regulating seat pitch, upChuck, then get ready for another airline bailout.
If people weren’t so willing to put up with crap from the airlines and the TSA just to go see Aunt Fannie, things would not have gotten this far.
Boycott the airlines and send a message to the corporate scum that run them.
Commiserations and condolences. Been there, too.
Why is he stupid?

Seat size is determined by the rule that you must be able to evacuate the aircraft in an emergency within 90 seconds.
I don’t blame Schumer for being so paternalistic - it’s in his DNA and we all know it. What’s scarier to me is how easy it is to see the GOPe allowing this nanny state crap to pass. Or MarioRoboto campaigning on it telling us all it’s a conservative measure.
There ya' go. Vote with your wallet.
I flew to Australia back in december, 6 hours on the 737, 10 hours on the 787. And coming back on an Airbus A320 to Honolulu, andcthen the Alaska 737 to Anchorage.
Worst was the 737, and it was actually a newer 737-800, almost no padding, minimal entertainment, just a bag of crunchies. And the 737 bounces around a lot.
The 787 Dreamliner was nice, much better air conditioning, higher cabin pressure, good seat back entertainment, seats are decent.
Hawaiian had the A320, best service by far, best food, best seats. Best i have ever seen overall for the money thats not First Class.
..Why dont we just turn everything to the government? Get it over with in one swoop....
Hillary is ready for that swoop in November. God, help us.
“Seat size is determined by the rule that you must be able to evacuate the aircraft in an emergency within 90 seconds.”
You left off the sarcasm tag.
Set size is based on maximum numbers of passengers that can be crammed in an aluminum tube. Try flying JAL, or Malaysian air, or even AA on an Airbus. Horrible, simply a horrible experience.
Another thoughtful idea from the wellspring that is the world’s greatest deliberative body. /sarc
Between the tiny seats, frequently canceled flights, and getting poked, prodded, and generally felt up before I can board, I have made the decision not to fly on any trip shorter than 2000 miles.
Screw the TSA. Screw the airlines. I hope they all go out of business.
I flew four Airbus 321’s last week. I swear the distance between the seats (front to back) is getting smaller.
It was interesting, there was a very large man trying to get into the lav on the last trip. He had to squeeze through the door. How he turned around once he got inside I don’t know. Now that I think about it, he was a guy so he didn’t have to. But I bet he couldn’t turn sideways to wash his hands.
