Poll: After Orlando, Huge Spike in Voters’ Concerns About Security (Clinton 38 Trump 38 Johnson 10)
Morning Consult ^ | 6/20/2016 | Cameron Easley

Posted on 06/20/2016 10:52:30 AM PDT by usafa92

A new Morning Consult poll shows national security is back at the forefront of voters’ minds following the mass shooting in Orlando that left dozens dead and injured.

In a national survey taken in the days after Omar Mateen’s attack on Pulse, a gay nightclub, almost three out of 10 voters (29 percent) said security was their top issue under consideration when casting their vote — a 10-point increase from a poll in early June. Similar spikes in voters’ concerns about national security were observed following the attacks in Paris, San Bernardino and Brussels.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said that whenever tragedy strikes, his poll numbers “go way up.” That trend bears out following the Orlando massacre, although his 3-point jump is modest at best.

In a head-to-head matchup with presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Trump is gaining ground. He still trails Clinton 42 percent to 40 percent, which is within the margin of error for the poll. He has closed the gap by 3 percentage points from Morning Consult’s previous poll, when he trailed Clinton by 5 points, 42 percent to 37 percent. Seventeen percent of voters in the most recent poll remain undecided.

In a three-way field that includes libertarian nominee Gary Johnson, Trump and Clinton are tied at 38 percent each. Johnson pulls in 10 percent of the vote, and 14 percent of voters are undecided.

Might be a good time for us to refresh our minds on what President Thomas Jefferson identified as what would be "the essential principles" of his Administration.

Both candidates might consult that great Author of our Declaration of Independence and President of the U. S., Thomas Jefferson, who, in his 1801 Inaugural Address laid out what might be considered to be "qualifications" for the American President.

Note, especially, the last paragraph quoted below, in which Jefferson advises citizens about what to do if the nation "wanders" from the "essential principles" of liberty outlined in his Address:

(Excerpt, "Our Ageless Constitution," p. xiv, reformatted)
"Let us, then, with courage and confidence pursue our own Federal and Republican principles, our attachment to union and representative government. Kindly separated by nature and a wide ocean from the exterminating havoc of one quarter of the globe; too high-minded to endure the degradations of the others; possessing a chosen country, with room enough for our descendants to the thousandth and thousandth generation;

- entertaining a due sense of our equal right to the use of our own faculties, to the acquisitions of our own industry, to honor and confidence from our fellow-citizens, resulting not from birth, but from our actions and their sense of them;

= enlightened by a benign religion, professed, indeed, and practiced in various forms, yet all of them inculcating honesty, truth, temperance, gratitude, and the love of man;

- acknowledging and adoring an overruling Providence, which by all its dispensations proves that it delights in the happiness of man here and his greater happiness hereafter

—with all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and a prosperous people?

- Still one thing more, fellow-citizens—a wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned.

- This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities.

"About to enter, fellow-citizens, on the exercise of duties which comprehend everything dear and valuable to you,

- it is proper you should understand what I deem the essential principles of our Government, and consequently those which ought to shape its Administration. I will compress them within the narrowest compass they will bear, stating the general principle, but not all its limitations.

- Equal and exact justice to all men, of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political;

- peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none;

- the support of the State governments in all their rights, as the most competent administrations for our domestic concerns and the surest bulwarks against antirepublican tendencies;

- the preservation of the General Government in its whole constitutional vigor, as the sheet anchor of our peace at home and safety abroad;

- a jealous care of the right of election by the people—a mild and safe corrective of abuses which are lopped by the sword of revolution where peaceable remedies are unprovided;

- absolute acquiescence in the decisions of the majority, the vital principle of republics, from which is no appeal but to force, the vital principle and immediate parent of despotism;

- a well disciplined militia, our best reliance in peace and for the first moments of war, till regulars may relieve them;

- the supremacy of the civil over the military authority;

- economy in the public expense, that labor may be lightly burthened;

- the honest payment of our debts and sacred preservation of the public faith;

- encouragement of agriculture, and of commerce as its handmaid;

- the diffusion of information and arraignment of all abuses at the bar of the public reason;

- freedom of religion; freedom of the press, and freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus, and trial by juries impartially selected.

These principles form the bright constellation which has gone before us and guided our steps through an age of revolution and reformation. The wisdom of our sages and blood of our heroes have been devoted to their attainment. They should be the creed of our political faith, the text of civic instruction, the touchstone by which to try the services of those we trust; and should we wander from them in moments of error or of alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and to regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety."

(Excerpt, Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural, 1801)

inistration.

I find it incredible that 38% believe gun grabbing Hildebeast is their favorite!! Absolutely amazing for 38% of America to be completely devoid of any gray matter at all. I am guessing this is the 38% that believe our rights as espoused in the BILL OF RIGHTS come to us from the almighty Federal Government.

I’ve said this again and again...

Trump takes this huge... Hillary best case is 15 states and about 180 EC votes... That’s her absolute best case.

The summer is here, no one is paying attention to politics, other than the die hards, and the only time they will will be when something like Orlando happens... and Trump is on the right side of world events.. Every event will boost him in the polls.

The events will occur, Trump will come out with a generally reasonable stand that puts america first and doesn’t pander to PC.. and Hillary and Obama will come out and try to argue shades of grey and how their traitorous stands are actually patrioitic....

Hillary stands no shot in November.. By October the Dems will be in full on panic mode just trying to hold onto states that none of the pundits would ever dream would be in play.

Every time the Establishment GOP gnashes their teeth about something Trump does.. and the MSM reports it as a bad thing... Trump will gain several points in the polls... The more they try to convince the people he’s wrong, the stronger he will get.

Folks need to relax and understand this. The MSM and the Political class are so out of touch with the electorate, that for the most part, the electorate wants the things that they get their panties all in a bunch over.

Understand, 20-25% of the population will vote Democrat no matter what, they are the socialist/communists... the true believers and the folks who just have been democrats their entire lives and really have no idea why.

SO you have about 13% additional saying they will vote for Hillary and their reasons will vary, but its trivial... the same is true that about 20-25% of the electorate will vote for a republican no matter what.....

Hillary is heading for disaster this fall, the political class and the MSM just can’t see it because they have been living in such an echo chamber with each other for so long they have no idea what is actually going on on the ground nor do they care.

You got that right.

Right now, folks are more or less are in vacations mode or getting ready for vacations, or having come back from vacations and politics is the LAST thing on their minds right now.

That last bit. Great insight. The elites can’t figure out why Trump just gets stronger with each of their attacks. The reason is simple, as you say. IMHO. When Trump’s latest “outrage” to their way of thinking causes them to recoil in horror Americans who see the MSM as slimy vermin are delighted by their discomfort.

I don’t trust any poll that gives the Libertarian candidate 10%. When did they ever achieve that in real life?

I dunno - I think a lot of the disaffected Bernie voters will end up with Johnson. Johnson’s support is a weird mix of conservative libertarians and free-weed liberals. I suspect a lot of the conservatives will relent and go with Trump, but they will be backfilled in the Johnson camp with the Berners. I think Trump will still wn handily though.
