They’re like a pack of hungry Macaques. I’d love to see one of them get grabbed and beaten to a pulp.

Empty seats and empty television audiences- that should teach the Olympics Organizing Committee and NBC.

In 1986, I got stationed in Panama. I needed to rent a house. I had this Panamanian guy come over and escort me to a place that he wanted to rent me. Nice neighborhood, newly built in past five years, really nice landscaping, two minutes from local mall. Tour of the house went nicely.

Then out front, there were three women having a conversation just on the street, and I noticed this odd guy walking about 50 feet away. It was like some Tiger on the prowl. He comes right up within twenty feet of the ladies and then goes into a run....snatching her purse and necklace. Off he goes.

At that point, I turned my head toward the direction where he came from, and on the hillside....there were all these lean-to houses sitting there....about a mile from where I was standing.....on the hill. I just looked at the mess, and said ‘no’ to the landlord.

Where you have mammoth-sized poverty, there is mammoth-sized crime. Rio simply isn’t a place where you’d ever want to go for a trip.

My father was stationed at Albrook AFB from ‘57-61. A friend of his was in Brazil at the same time; he would fly up the AAFB to visit every year. Joe said that in Brazil dead bodies were left to rot in the streets until family took them away. I was cub scout age when he told us that. I remember how serious he was.

You are correct. These stills are ripped from the youtube video you linked to. All the thieves and would be thieves are black and half have no shoes on. Too poor I suppose or they are street urchins.

Would teach NBC has they are losing millions for these broadcasts. Advertisers are not pleased! As for the Olympics Organizing Committee they were already paid billions when NBC won their bid for these "games".

I actually live on Albrook for two years (mid-80s). Probably one of the best housing areas in the military at the time.

What happens next time around when the OOC doesn’t get the big bucks they were expecting to televise the Olympics?

Let me answer that. It’s probably on to the next set of grifters hoping to cash in on kickbacks from the host country....

I remember many things about Panama. Albrook was like a country club. Well maintained and peaceful.

Our second year there we went to the beach at Santa Clara, where one morning we walked down to the strand. My father stopped us and said “Look at this and remember this; never in your life will you see something like this again.” I looked. The beach went down about two miles then curved to the left. Palm trees and the jungle stayed at least forty feet from the high tide zone. Pristine blue skies with a sprinkling of fair weather cumulus, and not one other person in view. Not one!

One day I watched the fishermen take an old row boat out into the surf, dropping a net as they did. Then they teamed up and pulled the net onto the shore. It was filled with fish. One guy took a fish out of the pile and motioned for me to follow him, which I did. He went to a bohio, handed the fish to some woman who started cleaning it right away. He sat in a hammock. I then realized that was his life. That was all he had to do that day.

There’s something to be said for simplicity.
