As a busy four-year-old boy races around his living room in Fredericton, David Holt can't bear to think of a quiet house.
But Holt and his wife Donda Holt nearly lost the chance to parent their son, Michael.
New Brunswick's Department of Social Development initially informed the Holts, who took in Michael as their foster child when he was a baby, that they were too old and overweight and not involved enough in the community to adopt him.
The rejection left them shocked, but they fought it and won.

Not in the headline or excerpt is the real reason.
If this is truly out of love for the child and not in some sort of effort to continue or start state support to the home financially, then the ruling may or may not be justified.
I can only say that it is not always the case when a headline tugs at a heart string where it rings true.
My only question is whether this family ever received any government compensation for their disabled son while he was alive and whether this new child qualifies them for more government support.
The real reason for the denial is that the child is mixed race and the parents are white.
So, let the kid languish?
That’s sad, but what about this? About 10 years ago my best friend, a Silky Terrier, had to be put down. All my friends noted how down I was and told me I had to replace him.
Several dog rescue places rejected me for a pet adoption because at 66 I was too old for a new dog. Fortunately I found one at a shelter and we are happily growing old together—but I’m a little jealous because she’s sorta become my mother’s dog and sleeps with her.
Translation.....you are not liberal enough!!!
Man, this couple didn’t get it at all!
He should have come in wearing a dress and she should have com in wearing a suit. They should then have declared they are both transgendered.
In Canada, the adoption paperwork would have been fast tracked (as it wold for many states down here in the Lower 48).
Yep! It happened in UK. Grandparents were denied the right to adopt the grandchildren because the were considered too old. One of them was in their 50’s. The government gave the children to a homosexual couple. This was a few years back.
Well, if the state won’t let white parents adopt non-white babies, then most of the non-white kids in the foster system are doomed by demographics.
This is my country, Canada, and our whole social worker mindset is what is at fault here. If you are not Canadian, you likely cant appreciate the complicated history and relationship we have with what we call First Nations. The reserve system is a mess and many children are in a bad place in their native communities but that is too politically incorrect to say out loud here. So we have had other situations where a native child is in the care of white parents who want to adopt and they have ripped away to put them back into the First Nations Community even, in many cases, where the First Nations Community says they dont want them. Ive known the people, twice, in similar cases to that.
How they not see the racism in this, I cannot understand. So to keep a child with its own kind we have returned native children to abusive or economically disadvantaged situations.
Rejected for pet ownership because of your age at 66?
Well, that does it for me. I’ve read enough “humans behaving like complete F@cktards” for one day.
Glad you found a pet.
Cheers
