A group of 50 politicians from across Europe have signed a letter stating that an independent Scotland would be “most welcome” as a full member of the European Union.
In the letter to Holyrood’s Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh and MSPs, the signatories pledge their support in ensuring the transition to membership is “as swift, smooth, and orderly as possible”.
The cross-party group includes parliamentarians from Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Greece, Hungary and Malta.

Unemployment within Scotland hovers around 4.5-percent (more or less). The problem is that they only have a couple of industry segments (whiskey, textiles (wool-related), fishing, agriculture, and tourism). If you were 15 years old....it’s a pretty limited and marginal future in front of you.
I think the welfare angle is something out of the 1960s/1970s....it’s probably outdated and not accurate for today. If you asked some Scot about this whole EU thing....they just want the delicate and fragile trading situation to remain stable. Absolutely nothing should occur to disturb that trend.
One item which you might want to review is the map of districts and the last referendum vote. The dozen districts along the UK border? They voted almost 70-percent to remain within the UK. The further north you go...the less that the remain vote was. So there is some Scot-lite and Scot-extreme view on nationality.
“...an independent Scotland...” would be welcome in the EU.
Is Scexit mandatory? Is a hybrid Scotland foreseeable.
If Scotland does not become independent of the UK then it can’t join the EU as a Member State because it would not be equal. As far as I can tell.

That’s what I thought. That would mean the EU is advocating for Scexit.

With the North Sea oil fields in serious decline, and low prices likely to remain long term due to fracking, Scotland is a long-term welfare case. The “Shale Band” for oil prices ($40-$60/bbl), means that Scotland will be a money loser until something fundamental changes.
A bit more industrious than Greece no doubt, but about as socialist, with none of the nice beaches, or Navy. They will fervently demand free Nationalized health care, which they will never be able to pay for.
They state: “Democracy and mutual respect are at the heart of the European project and so, whilst we are saddened by the vote of a small majority for the United Kingdom to leave the EU, we respect this as a democratic decision of UK citizens.“We recognise that this was not your choice however and that Scotland voted strongly to remain within the EU. The question of Scotland’s constitutional future, and your relationships with the UK and the EU are for the people of Scotland to decide. It is not our place to tell Scotland what path you should take.”
Scotland runs the biggest fiscal operating deficit in the Western World.
Perhaps the EU would also be good enough to take over subsidies to Puerto Rico for the US as well. That would really poke us in the eye - oh please don’t do that!/sarcasm
Welfare refugees and Welfare Nations of the world unite! The best handouts are in the EU - they can always tax Germans more.
I wouldn’t let Scotland leave. I would schedule a plebiscite 20 years to the day from the last one — if they wanted to keep trying.
That aside, the EU should not be interfering with Britain’s internal affairs.
