Trump visit did not help Luther Strange, new poll says; 4 polls give Roy Moore big lead

A Senate poll released less than 24 hours before polls open Tuesday finds that former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore still has a substantial lead over U.S. Sen. Luther Strange in the Republican primary runoff.

It also indicates that President Trump's visit to Huntsville for a campaign rally for Strange did not give the president's preferred candidate a noticeable boost in the eyes of voters.

Good.
Trump voters are smart enough to figure out who to vote for.

The Cochran win was a Pyrrhic Victory for the Republican Establishment.

Exactly so! It still burns.

Those who are voting against Luther Strange because McConnell endorsed him are missing the point. As Trump pointed out in this weekend’s rally, Strange and McConnell have no history with one another. This is not a case of Strange being a McConnell lackey. This is an instance of McConnell trying to cultivate Strange to be one of his lackeys. Big difference. President Trump is fighting for Strange, a man who has supported him from the day he entered the senate, so that McConnell doesn’t get his hooks into him. If Strange wins because of president Trump’s endorsement, and in spite of McConnell’s, then president Trump will have prevented McConnell from using his support for Strange to extract loyalty from him.

People are totally missing what this is about. Yes, both McConnell and Trump are endorsing the same candidate, but they are opponents, battling for Strange’s loyalty. If Strange wins, because of Trump’s endorsement and in spite of McConnell’s he will owe McConnell nothing, and will know that with his continued support of Trump’s agenda, Trump will always have his back.

Moore will win big — maybe by 20.

Thanks for reminding me about Rove. He is another establishment bastard I despise.

Back when he was known as that Magnificent Bastard all he had managed to do was use all those Mexican voters he was going to use and managed to lose the House and Senate.

A good solution to the dilemma of having two fine candidates seeking one office is for President Trump to nominate Sen. Strange to the vacant Homeland Security position.

After 7½ years, Senator Moore will be old enough to retire, and Mr. Strange can resume his senatorial career with an impressive Executive Branch service resume.

That’s what I think as well. This endorsement seems to be a detour for political reasons and he may be relieved when Moore wins.

They (the RNC) did that in Mississippi - called the true conservative in the race a KKKer to black voters to get them to vote for the RINO in the primary.

Is this an open primary?

They might pull that dirty trick again.

Interesting angle but anyone familiar with Alabama politics has known Moore is probably going to win the seat no matter what. Trump or his people would have known this. So maybe Trump’s goal wasn’t to secure a win for Strange per se, but instead just to demonstrate how much his intervention could shift the polls. He didn’t need Strange to win to show that his endorsement is good for a ten or fifteen percent bump. That’s probably why he came to Huntsville: to generate some additional movement in the polls that is unmistakably due to him. Then, once Moore nevertheless wins the primary, Trump will make amends with his AL base by fully backing Moore in the general. If Moore then wins the general decisively, which is likely, and especially if he wins against a scheming McConnell effort against him, that will be further proof of Trump’s influence.

“Seems to me Trump knew this ahead of time and played it perfectly.

Can say he went to bat for Strange and Strange loses anyway.”

Is that such a great thing though? An influential endorsement can be big currency for a President with his own party, particularly leading into the midterms. Gotta figure there’s a lot of the GOP weasels still plotting about whether it’s better for them to stand with the President or stand against him through to 2018. If having the President go to bat for them doesn’t seem like it would swing the race their way, I can’t say I trust them not to treat that as a reason to stick the knife in instead.

I’d have thought the best result for the President here is one that shows his endorsement can be an election game-changer. That would get the GOP scuttling and creeping and pleading at his feet all the way to next November.

Your calculus expects Luther to parse how many votes Trump got him from a visit versus how many vote McConnell got him from $9 million, and clearly give Donald the win?

What illegal drug do you inject?

Yes, and let’s NEVER forget that Rand Paul and Ted Cruz helped McConnell in Mississippi (again as per Sundance/Conservative Treehouse’s excellent research reporting).

Rand and Cruz are sleeper GOPe.

President Trump is not the cause behind last year's electorate; he is the effect. As 60,000,000 voters said:

I heard that in a race against his Democrat opponent, Moore is doing considerably better than Strange is. So much for Trump’s claim that if Moore wins then the Democrats might take the seat.

He has been isolated by Kelly and Javanka.
Fed bad polling data .
He should have stayed neutral but he supported a Fat Cat DC lobbyist.

Sadly , just wait until Kelly and Javanka force Amnesty on us .

It’s coming .

Sounds like at least one will.. trump. Why would he support a proven corruptocrat versus a genuine hero like Moore?
After months of not using the bully pulpit on the wall or on healthcare.. he finally uses it to trash a great American.
