Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says anthem protests are damaging the NFL

Dallas owner says he has heard from concerned sponsors

The Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who this month said he would bench any of his players who “disrespect the flag” during the national anthem, says that the protest movement is damaging the NFL.

This season dozens of NFL players have knelt during the anthem to highlight racial injustice in the United States. The movement has split the nation, with many perceiving it as disrespectful to military veterans. The NFL’s television ratings are also down, although it is not clear whether this is directly linked to the protests, as TV sports audiences have fallen across America.

“There is no question the league is suffering negative effects from these protests,” Jones said on Sunday.

Jones’s Cowboys are valued at around $5bn, and he said he had heard from concerned sponsors. “Our ability to be substantive is based on having a strong NFL, a league that people are really interested in and want to watch and want to watch the games,” Jones said. “At all times, if I am anything, I am first and foremost a proponent of making the NFL strong. Making us have as many people watching the game as we can and watching in light of what we are doing and that’s playing football. If all this makes you stronger to represent messages, let’s don’t do it in a way that tears down the strength of the NFL.”

“It would be a good time to start a new football league that puts forward a patriotic America loving image.”

Great idea if you’re a billionaire with a lot of patience. Call it the American Football League. Or, is that name trademarked, or otherwise protected from others using it?

For this year...I think the merchandising arm of the NFL is the one area seriously hit (wouldn’t surprise me if they are 50-percent off from previous years). Advertising rates for TV can only be guessed but I’d say they are taking a 10-percent loss as a minimum).

But come spring of 2018 as season ticket sales would occur....I think you are correct. Discounts will have to be offered. Some teams will offer deals of pay the price of three tickets, and get a 4th free. For the lesser teams, like the Browns...I think they are going to be in serious financial trouble by fall of 2018.

As for the real damage? All of this leads to what I think will be a league cut on pay by 2019, and some major strike to occur. The union will find no public support for the players and the strike will finish off whatever enthusiasm existed.

In some way, the NFL made the same mistake of Megan Kelly and Fox News. They take their conservative following for granted and make a play for liberals. Liberals won’t support them and they lose their conservative support. They think they are bigger than life and end up a small shadow of what they could have been.

I was going to say the same thing. The PFL - Patriots Football League. Don’t hire America hating thugs, and don’t hire vegans to sell the hot dogs.

Is that why he was on his knees with black lives matter? If Jones had been the leader alleged in internet propaganda, you wouldn't be able to touch cowboys fan gear. Instead he made a fool of himself protesting based on a lie. His whining is getting tiresome.

No, Jerry. You lay down the law to your employees and tell them to show respect, or they’re fired.

Nfl trying to expand viewership to the xgens and to the millenials...thats prob why they embraced all this virtue signaling and hip music acts and “we are the world” utopian delusion...but the game is now “pitch and catch”...and dont touch tooo hard...you might hurt someone...the whole idea of post college grown men pushing and striking and leaping and throwing and catching is so irrelevant to the real needs of most peoples lives..that for them to try and elevate it into some big societal movement is ludicrous....and for that...they need to.be ignored and cut off from financial reward...

And on top of that, they now try to be globalists.
Maybe there’ll come a day when overseas games are their only option.
Then they can take the “N” out of NFL.

Re:”The NFL hates America and America noticed.
Now the feeling is mutual.
There is nothing they can do now to repair their image.”

That is worth repeating. Over and over. The first two lines should be printed on t-shirts.

NO $hit Jerry, you effing Mensa! But we decent Americans are far from done with your crappy “league.” We have a twofer going. You and your fellow “owners” will go broke, and your multimillionaire Black players will finally get jobs that fit their true abilities, shining shoes in airport terminals and hotels all over the country, after they finish their sentences for various criminal activities and for beating up their women.

“It would be a good time to start a new football league that puts forward a patriotic America loving image.”

To do that, you will have to make it “all White!” And while we’re at it, how about deporting the Black players for their lack of patriotism. Let them see that even with a few million in their jeans, they can still only buy a dirt floor hut most places.
