The Department of Housing and Urban Development spent more than $31,000 on a new table and chairs for the dining room adjacent to Secretary Ben Carson's office — revelations that came just months after an official that warned against high expenses was moved to a new role within the department.

The former senior HUD official, Helen Foster, has since filed a complaint that she was demoted in retaliation for raising concerns about granting extra funds to redecorate Carson's office and other issues within the department.

The media did this to Nancy Reagan when she ordered new china.

Was the media ever concerned about Obama’s vacations with an entourage of hundreds?

You mean when they spent less than usual on Ben Carson, meanwhile trying to make it sound like it was too much?

$31,000 for a 12 or 16 place setting of good quality including chairs, delivery and setup is not outrageous.

Why a dining room?

Secretary Carson works in DC. He likely takes at least one and probably two meals per day during the work day. I don't want him wandering around L'Enfant Plaza eating in the local restaurants.

So I don't have any problem with a dining room in his office. And, $31k for dining furniture in a govt office is not really that much money.

Carson comes across as a modest man. What a hoot. There’s nothing modest about grandiose spending just because it’s taxpayer money and then punishing those who point it out.

Come on, now. He can eat at his f*cking desk or the cafeteria like the rest of us. Spending $31k of taxpayers’ money on a private dining room table is ridiculous, and is exactly the type of government waste that this Administration should be stopping!

This smells like a setup to me.

I don’t believe that Ben Carson craves an expensive dining set.
