Several casinos in the greater Los Angeles area have reopened for Memorial Day weekend after nearly two months of being shut down due to the deadly coronavirus.
On Friday, Morongo Casino in Cabazon, located near Palm Springs in Riverside County, reopened at 2:00 p.m. Additional casinos Tortoise Rock, Agua Calient, and others located in Coachella Valley opened earlier on Friday. According to KTLA, Pechanga, also located in Riverside County, will open next week with Soboba near San Jacinto.
In addition to their reopening efforts, representatives for the casinos have stated that certain safety precautions and measures have been implemented. A few of those measures include limiting the number of customers inside at one time, temperature checks at entranceways, and a modified cleaning schedule. Those using table games and slot machines will also be spread out so that social distancing guidelines are met. Certain slot machines will also feature modified barriers. Certain casinos that have chosen to reopen have prohibited smoking and require all customers and employees to wear face masks.

Question: Can people blow on the dice before throwing them? Will a dorky employee run over to spray them?
And the good card hand being shown will then be disinfected?
Maybe play in hazmat suits with boots and helmets. And use a Covid free pointer to push slot machine choices which will eject a slip with Handi-Wipe attached to show your winnings.
These casinos reopening are on Indian reservations. As the Indian lands are sovereign governmental entities, they can decide to reopen regardless of what Gavin Newsom says.
Figured that. Probably the Fugawee tribe.
Annnd I’ll bet Newsom is pissed....
Well, this is what you get when you allow an impossible situation. We have sovereign nations within another sovereign nation! It doesn’t work!
Here’s what has to happen with the “tribes.” Choose one: 1) independence, 2) full and unqualified American citizenship. Cannot have both. With independence, there have to be borders, a different currency, different military, different president, different congress. With citizenship all special privileges go away, and the “tribes” are dissolved, and the members are American and have to drop the moniker “Native American.”
Got to happen! but obviously won’t! Victim status is easily monetized.
Many people don’t realize that much of the Palm Springs area is checkerboarded with Indian reservation land. See map:

In fact, many hotels, restaurants and other business sit on Indian reservation land, and, in theory at least, might be able to thumb their noses at Gavin Newsom. That could be why a lot of Palm Springs restaurants have reportedly reopened to the public. The powers that be are “letting them,” possibly because they might not be able to stop them if it were litigated.
“These casinos reopening are on Indian reservations.”
Thank’s for the clarification.
Meanwhile, since the lockdown, I’ve been going to my dive bar in California, its turned into a speakeasy but with just the regulars. And definitely physical distance is ignored.
It’s interesting to think about the Indian reservations and the status of members of those tribes. American Indians are American citizens and they are not required to live on reservations.
Perhaps we could say they get the Best of Both Worlds. They are American citizens and are allowed to live anywhere in America. On the other hand they are members of a tribal Nation within America. Some tribes have done very well for themselves with setting up gambling and Resort facilities on their reservations.
One could almost believe that O.C. doesn't actually exist.
Casinos? YES!
Wineries for wine-tasting? NO!
I cannot figure out the rationale for who gets to open and who has to stay closed...........
Think of it this way. Who has the better lobbyists.
Simply because these are Native-owned establishments. Gov Nuisance couldnt do squat about it as they have a unique federal-tax category.
Every wonder why Jerry Seinfeld, Pat Benatar do their shows at Indian casinos? For tax purposes.
I know Morongo opened on Saturday because my gambler bud goes there as a regular and wins at at the tables, and told me this morning it was PACKED. What annoyed him were the mandatory mask rules but it gave everybody an advantage at the poker tables as know one shows their tells facially.
YUp. See my post 13. My GOp bud was at Morongo Saturday and it was packed. The pit boss told him later it was the biggest income making day in the last 5 years.
Really? I didn’t know that . So then income from concerts and comedians going to Indian casinos, are taxed differently? More favorably I assume?
Are the gambling winnings taxed differently too?
I spoke to the booking agent for one of the 80’s bands who prefer to play at Morongo and a number of reservation-located casinos. They dont have to pay the performance tax and keep the earnings at full rate. As an example, look at San Manuel INDIAN casino, and the bands are always booked there months in advance. That’s not a coincidence, he said. Now why would Jerry Seinfeld have a show at San Manuel lol because it’s obvious.
