An intraparty struggle over how to overhaul the $600 federal unemployment bonus is threatening to not only cut off benefits for millions of Americans, but also delay passage of the next coronavirus stimulus package for several weeks.
The enhanced unemployment insurance booster passed as part of the CARES Act is set to expire at the end of July. However, given the way states process claims, the last payment will go out this weekend; on Saturday in 49 states and on Sunday in 1 state.
Internal Republican Strife Over Unemployment Benefit Extension
Despite this impending deadline, and the financial disaster it will inflict on more than 20 million Americans currently claiming unemployment benefits, internal strife has hampered any progress as Republicans try to thread the needle between scaling back the program and putting forth an uncomplicated proposal that wont rattle already overstretched state unemployment offices and their antiquated systems.

Which part of the Constitution Authorizes the Congress to allocate funds to the Citizenry in the name of subsistence??

Lets hope that also doesnt kill Trump at the polls. There are still a LOT of unemployed people. And theyre allowed to vote last time I checked
This was a cluster from the beginning.
There are 5.8 million jobs out there.
Which part of the Constitution Authorizes the Congress to allocate funds to the Citizenry in the name of subsistence?
The general welfare pledge in the preamble?
I admire your principles. I hope they dont doom the GOP at the polls in Nov.
Which part gives permission to impose tyrannical orders based on questionable(and fabricated)cold and flu outbreak?
Way too pessimistic. Both parties goal is the same, to mindlessly squander money we dont have. To pass this the republicans will just use their time-tested strategy: Cave in on tons of the stuff the rats want, and itll pass
No problem
Good, we won’t need another give-away money program.
Actually, if it keeps the Democrats from sweeping the November elections, I have no problem with extending the benefits another six or eight months. Herbert Hoover was principled like you, and opposed bailouts@ for unemployed people. That gave us decades of one-Party Democrat rule.
Both parties goal is the same, to mindlessly squander money we dont have
From what I can see, the Dems would just as soon the payment extensions dont pass, so they can have a winning election issue
They remember how FDR trounced Hoover - the last time unemployment was as high as now. (our real rate is north of 20 percent when camouflaging tricks are taken away)
People will find work when the checks run out. It’s human nature.
Remember when hussein made it so you could collect for 99 weeks. Many people just rode the gravy train until the checks stopped.
When these people need to find jobs they will be more likely to raise hell about everything being shut down.
The KungFlu will suddenly go away.
As long as they get a big check every week they won’t care if it lasts forever.
Youre right. If government seized your land, it has to pay you. The same principle makes sense when govt orders your boss to close his perfectly legal and licensed business, throwing you out of work
People will find work when the checks run out
Really? When govt has ordered a third of the economy to shut down?
Sorry, I didnt read your post carefully. You have a point that pressure to open the economy would be greater without these unemployment checks
But sentiment for ousting the incumbent party would also be greater, I suspect. I dont want to see a repeat of the 1932 wipeout of Republicans. It took 20 years before they won the White House again.
“The World does not owe you a living.”
My Dad.
My life changed when I finally realized that.
The preamble says “promote the general welfare” not Provide, and the preamble isn’t actually part of the constitution legally speaking. But I see this as a State Issue, not a Federal One. Personally I think we should abolish the food stamp program and the Feds could setup a Soup Kitchen on Every Corner in America that needs one.
Politically, they should cut it to $3-400 through November or December. GOP was stupid to agree to $600 ever, let alone capitulating to the lockdown.
Yes, we do live in different times. S0 maybe my previous comment doesn’t apply.
