Iran is ruled by “twelver” Islam and unlike the old Soviet Union it is liable to ignite a huge war without batting an eye.
The Soviets in their atheistic glory weren’t eager to see what the next world has in store for them. Twelver Islam by contrast believes that their Mahdi will return during an apocalyptic war to convert the entire world to Islam.

By contrast a secular Muslim like Saddam Hussein wasn’t into radical Islam. He’d give it lip service on occasion but that’s all. He had Christian Iraqis in his cabinet.
Saudi Wahhabism is intolerant and sponsors trouble but nothing like what Iran has been into since 1979. And the current Prince is attempting to drag Saudi Arabia away from Wahhabism and into the modern age. The Middle East is a complicated region. Only fools like Bush the Younger would think it can be turned into Western liberal democracies.
