Parag Agrawal: Why Indian-born CEOs dominate Silicon Valley
BBC News ^ | December 4, 2021 | By Nikhil Inamdar and Aparna Alluri

Parag Agrawal, who was appointed this week as Twitter's CEO, has joined at least a dozen other Indian-born techies in the corner offices of the world's most influential Silicon Valley companies.

Microsoft's Satya Nadella, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, and the top bosses of IBM, Adobe, Palo Alto Networks, VMWare and Vimeo are all of Indian descent.

Indian-origin people account for just about 1% of the US population and 6% of Silicon Valley's workforce - and yet are disproportionately represented in the top brass. Why?

"No other nation in the world 'trains' so many citizens in such a gladiatorial manner as India does," says R Gopalakrishnan, former executive director of Tata Sons and co-author of The Made in India Manager.

"From birth certificates to death certificates, from school admissions to getting jobs, from infrastructural inadequacies to insufficient capacities," growing up in India equips Indians to be "natural managers," he adds, quoting the famous Indian corporate strategist C K Prahalad.

The competition and chaos, in other words, makes them adaptable problem-solvers - and, he adds, the fact that they often prioritise the professional over the personal helps in an American office culture of overwork.

"This is the result of a drastic shift in US immigration policy in the 1960s," write the authors of The Other One Percent: Indians in America.

Or because they combine those traits with a racist streak a mile wide, preferring their own nearly exclusively in recruiting, promotion, and project selection, and systematically heaping blame and disdain onto non-Indians, particularly female Americans.

Now that I think about it, I can’t remember seeing one voluntarily speak to a black female American, at all, about anything.

In my experience, young people from India are smart, dutiful and diligent, respectful, and willing to work for less money in order to have a chance to prove themselves.

(All qualities that seem to have been spoiled-out of a lot of American kids.)

India has 1.399 billion "Natural Managers"?

Their caste system may say something else.

My experience has been very different. My workplace has been largely Black for a long time. Our Indian interns have bonded with Black AND White women, see them as mother figures, and still contact them and come back to visit them years after they’ve moved on.

All the ones I worked with would sleep at their desks. Laziest gang of arrogant creeps I ever worked with.

I’m sorry your experience was so different.

Just out of curiosity, what field are you in?

My parents rented an apartment in the basement of our house, three blocks from North Dakota State University. On several occassions we had students from India and Sri Lanka living there. As freshmen they came ready to enroll in 2nd year calculus and second year physics courses. Very very few American students are that well prepared as freshmen.

How does being racist make them become high-ranking executives at such a high rate?

I suspect that the quality of their schools has a lot more to do with it. The top universities in India and China are imitating the way our top universities used to be in the '60s and '70s. They are not imitating the way our top universities are in 2021.

Thanks. All of the young people from India that I’ve known have been in the STEM fields.

Maybe they won’t complain about their low wages? More for the board.

I have seen some of this, not sure about the black female part.

I just checked the linkedin of one I know, she is part of the exec leadership team at a formerly American, now .Indian infiltrated tech company and she does have many male .Indian contacts. I was starting to wonder until the 3rd or 4th page.

If people from India are all “natural managers”, then India itself would no longer be a hairball of chaos, and they would no longer by trying or want to immigrate to the US.

You left out my mention of the Indian caste system.

One has to be born into a class to increase their education.

It started with the H1B visa’s in the 90s. I used to sell Employee benefits in the Silicon Valley and at the time they could pay an immigrant Indian 40% less than the Americans were paid. All the companies betrayed the American employees for cheap labor and this is the result.
