Biden will announce emergency waiver on summer ethanol ban to combat rising gas prices

Washington CNN — President Joe Biden on Tuesday will announce new steps his administration is taking to address rising gasoline prices across the country, including emergency measures to expand biofuel sales...

[Snip]

The President is slated to announce that the Environmental Protection Agency will issue an emergency waiver permitting year-round sales of E15 gasoline, which contains a 15% ethanol blend, on a trip to Menlo, Iowa, where he’ll visit POET Bioprocessing, a biofuels plant that specializes in the creation of bioethanol.

[Snip]

The sale of E15 gasoline is usually prohibited from June to mid-September because of air quality concerns. Under former President Donald Trump, the EPA issued an order allowing permanent year-round sales of the biofuel blend in 2019, but the order was overturned last year by the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.

Biden’s announcement, a senior administration official said, “is distinct from” his predecessor’s efforts to expand ethanol sales in that it’s “based on the current circumstance, which is a fuel supply emergency.”

Lesko Brandon goes to Iowa to announce he is rescinding his reversal of Trump's year-round ethanol order. Previously, Biden's administration said too much pollution was the issue when he reversed Trump's order.

Now, with oil and corn prices soaring, and higher refinery costs to produce ethanol, LGB campaigns in Iowa with today's news. Putin's fault.

I only use corn-free gasoline.

Well Joe diverting corn into the transportation fuel sector away from people food and animal feed to produce people food will look real silly when folks are starving to death due to the likely food shortages.

Note US Winter wheat production is down. Droughts around the world. Russia is on of the largest suppliers of fertilizer used in food production. California has a huge water problem and water for irrigation will be cut back. China and major south American countries are having crop problems.

But hey, let's just let folks starve. Joe's constituency will not try to push foreign aid and famine relief assistance to other countries.

When the food inflation/shortage emergency overtakes the gas price emergency, what will be the whack a mole response to get more corn on the market?

You combine this move with the skyrocketing price of fertilizer and you’re right we have everything in place for runaway inflation and shortages.

How long before we repeat gas rationing, we experienced in the 70s.

Added to another Biden reversal of Biden's reversal of Trump's policy.

Around here, one ear of fresh corn is up to nearly a dollar already.

Oil and wheat futures are up more than 3% this morning. Corn futures up more than 1%. Fasten your seat belt.

I’m guessing all that ethanol will come from corn fields NOT planted because the cost of fertilizer has tripled. Since ethanol contains about one-third less energy than gasoline, you get fewer miles per fill-up and have to buy more frequently.

This doesn’t seem to be well thought out.

Paid .99 apiece for a few ears at Publix the other day. It was very good because it was fresh. But fresh it will not stay for when a lot of folks see the price they’ll pass.

Let’s not forget that the Ukraine won’t be producing much grain. And, grain is a very much fungible commodity.
We need to drill baby drill and plant baby plant. Reinstall Trump policies and eliminate Biden’s - now!

Corn ethanol requires almost as much hydrocarbon energy for tillage, fertilizer, cultivation, pesticides, harvest, transportation, fermenting, distillation, and transportation as it contains when it arrives at the refinery for blending.

It’s basically a process for turning crude oil and natural gas into ethanol.

Sugar ethanol from Brazil is a little more efficient.

“...but the order was overturned last year by the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit”

Let’s see if the same US Court of Appeals has the balls the halt the order. Oh, I know, this time is different because it is an “emergency”. Nevermind that the emergency was self-induced on purpose. This is how the rats operate. Create an emergency and then claim not to let it go to waste.

Lesko Brandon should also ban the sale of “winter blend” gasoline in states or areas that require that by federal edict.

That stuff is responsible for a 10% reduction in mileage.

Aren’t we headed for a HUGE famine where corn will be necessary to prevent starvation?

Thank you, democrats.

I am not helping a single one of you. I hope you suffer the most.
