The pile burn was done in January in snowy conditions. It snowed several times after it was “extinguished”. A “sleeper” fire. Happens in Alaska sometimes, but exceptionally rare in NM. There was a fire near a ranch where I worked. Determined to be lightning caused, but the most recent lightning had been a week earlier. Fire can do weird things.
Anyone here remember the Cerro Grande fire in 2000 that burned down half of Los Alamos? That was a “controlled burn” started by the Forest Service during the spring windy season.
I worked for the Forest Service for a number of summers, everything from brush disposal crews to hotshot fire crews. I probably actually set more stuff on fire than I put out; that was my job. Clearcut slash, hand piles, machine piles, log piles on yarder landings, thinning by fire, the list goes on.
There’s a need for fuel reduction in the forests to decrease the severity of wildfires when they do start. Fire is by far the most cost-effective method of fuel reduction, so it gets used a lot. Pile burning is typically done in the winter snow and rain, as the Forest Service really does not want to start big destructive fires.
I don’t know specific details of this fire’s origin, but roots and large buried pieces of wood can smolder for months without even producing visible smoke, then flare up when conditions are hot and dry. I have been called to flareups that happened more than six months after the original burn.
This fire is unfortunate, but I don’t think its start can be blamed on negligence or incompetence on the part of the Forest Service. How it got to the size it has might be another story, but I don’t know details of that, either.
We are.
Yes
The Barack Obama rule. “Never underestimate underestimate Joe’s ability to f*** things up”
Yes,
This was Barack Obama’s primary contribution to American meme culture.
Roger that. Hot coals can last a long time if not tended to.
Cerro Grande was a controlled burn ignited NOT by the Forest Serice but by Bandelier National Monument the day before predicted Red Flag conditions. The Forest Service, and several State agencies cautioned AGAINST ignition.
Yeah, Superintendent Roy Weaver. Retired the same year with a sweet pension.
Well, it was government agency either way.
Nope, because he is a s**t head!! Thus, his prize!!
Naw, won’t happen because the gov is a commie loving dimocrat.

But I know that you know that already. [from previous discussions.]
Thats it!
Yup, they have the sustainability there, but the political clout is with others who have no interest other than letting it BURN.
And in five or six year, that is what will happen.
I have my SFI and APA membership cards around here someplace.
IN the southwest Rocky Mountain states, I know of NOT ONE outfit that has SFI certification. And back where I ran my business, if you have not got your SFI certificates and do not have it on file at ALL the manufacturing plants, you dont ship even a stick of firewood in there.
I know a crew who came down here from MN and they, as well as myself, joke about how absolutely STUPID the loggers are in the southwest.
But, they’ll register their machinery with the fire crews and send that machinery out and collect over 3 grand, for each machine, per hour for the total time it is on the fire. Aside from that, they get PAID to transport that machinery to the fires.
Yet these assholes will shut down a fine plant that is thinning out the timber preventing fires.
What a shame.
