Mike Lee on Gun Bill Compromise: We Should ‘Not Legislate Under the Heat of the Moment’
Breitbart ^ | 06/19/2022 | Jeff poor

During an appearance on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) urged Congress not to legislate under the “heat of the moment,” referring to the emotions resulting from gun violence in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX.

Lee told host Shannon Bream he had yet to see the language of legislation from a reported compromise between the “gang of 20” and said the disagreement could come on terms like what constitutes an “assault rifle.”

dear mike from utah,

i do not take kindly from outsiders of louisiana telling mewhat i should or should not do, regarding a constitutional amendment that contains the words “shall not be incringed”.

Gutless RINO doesn’t have the testicular fortitude to call for the repeal of hideous gun laws and a new bill for national constitutional carry without background checks.

All RINO gangbangers who agree and vote with the ‘RATS’ Nazi version of “gun control” should immediately be banished from the GOP Party. That will help me cut down on my lists of GOOBers I would never vote for. I put the Bill of Rights ahead of any politicians and their parties.

Bad news makes worse law, and politicians by nature are reactionaries.

I’m curious - are you okay with background checks at all, or do you think they shouldn’t exist at all?

Bush League Republicans have to assist the Democrats because they are Assistant Democrats.

If you can't be trusted to be armed you should not be running around loose.

My guess is that current background checks do nothing. Criminals don't buy guns at retail. I have seen no data that indicates differently.

Zero background checks. They infringe upon law abiding citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights. My philosophy is simple. Anyone in prison should not have access to ANY weapon. Once a man serves his time and pays his debt to society he deserves to have all of his rights so he can fully function and be a productive member of society. That includes the ability to protect himself, just like any other human being. Thus, there is no need for background checks, since prisoners are not able to freely go to a gun store and purchase a gun. The crime problem in America is not solved by background checks or gun control. The crime problem in America is solved by cops, DAs, judges and juries that actually follow the law. Perhaps there is a problem with the current set of laws, but I’d like to see a criminal-justice system actually follow the laws first before creating any new ones.

I thought so. Without going through all the examples of what that would mean in practice give. Our revolving door prison system, I'll just say I don't agree, and leave it at that.

We Should ‘Not Legislate Under the Heat of the Moment’

How long did it take to pass the bill that upped security for the Supreme Court?

Why not just admit that there is nothing that the Democrats or the Republicans can agree on? The Democrats have their solutions. The Republicans have their solutions. Neither side's 'solution' would accomplish anything. So stop wasting time.

Our revolving door prison system

So idiots like you can mention the problem but are too stupid to know it is the problem. Your solution is to fix the wrong problem which only infringes on the rights of law abiding citizens. Do you think the gunmen of the 30+ shootings in Chicago so far this weekend passed background checks? Eff'n mornon. Get some critical thinking skills. Meanwhile stop voting.

I’m not a fan of making it easy for convicted felons and mental incompetents who aren’t in prison to buy the gun of their choice.

The question is, why are you? Do you fall into just one category, or both?

But you are a fan of making it difficult for law abiding citizens. You are so damn stupid to get it. Criminals don’t care about laws. That makes them criminals. They don’t care about background checks, so they don’t buy their guns with a background check. As for mental incompetents, I guess you are okay with the government deciding who is mentally incompetent, particularly when they have broken no laws. They are being denied their rights without due process. You’re no conservative. You’re a fricking anti-American leftist.

How about you define your stance, Mr. Johnny on the Spot? Are you for “enhanced” background check laws when any firearm gets “transferred”, like the laws in Washington state and California?

No. I support the current system, and improving it by catching the convicted felons and those adjudged mentally ill that slip through the cracks because some states screw up some of their own data. The NRA and a lot of Republicans have pointed to those screw-ups as evidence of how we should be enforcing the laws already in the books - not adding new ones.

I oppose background checks for private sales. Although personally, whenever I've sold a gun to someone I don't know, I insist on them getting a check.
