Marijuana use is becoming a new normal among young adults
The Hill ^ | Oct. 18, 2022 | Daniel de Visé

Cannabis users soon may be a majority among young adults in the District of Columbia and several pot-friendly states, a trend that points to a potential future of destigmatized marijuana across much of the nation.

More than two-fifths of young men and women nationwide now use cannabis at least on occasion, according to federal data, a quotient that has risen steadily in a decade of relentless legalization. Much of the trend is driven by young women, who have all but closed a decades-long gender gap in marijuana use.

A pot-addled America is an easily conquered America.

As a kid growing up in the late 60s and 1970s, I watched the adults pretty closely. Alcohol AND tobacco with lunch, then back to work. Smoke some more. Come home to a martini. Have another before dinner. Go out to eat. "What can I get you from the bar while you wait, sir?".Wine with dinner. Smoke while you eat. Later, a "Nightcap". Folks on this board are old. Everyone saw that. Do folks drink like that now? They just switched vices.

Better that then China produced fentanyl. That kills even if the person didn’t use it. First responders die trying to revive those who overdose. That battle is caused by the liberals. At least marijuana is made, produced and inspected by states that allow it leaving the cartels and China out of it.

The marijuana of old used to be classified as a hallucinogen and was thought to not cause addiction because there was no identified withdrawal syndrome. This has changed and with the increased potency of THC there is a definite recognized withdrawal syndrome which includes increased anger, irritability, depression, restlessness, headache, loss of appetite, insomnia and severe cravings for marijuana.9 It has been reported that 9% of those who experiment with marijuana will become addicted; 17% of those who start using marijuana as teenagers will become addicted; and 25–50% of those who use daily will become addicted.10 A 2015 study carried out in the UK found that high-potency cannabis use is associated with increased severity of dependence, especially in young people.11

Excellent post. Beyond psychosis, it has been well established that using pot on a regular, or near regular basis, destroys motivation and initiative.

So, what we get from this “harmless”, “no worse than alcohol” drug is a nation of filled with burn-outs who cannot read or write because the public school system has utterly failed, and who end up disabled and requiring taxpayers to fund them because they are totally unemployable and/or disabled due to the long-term impact of “harmless” THC.

Alcohol can be consumed without marked intoxication. Not so with marijuana. You smoke it for the PURPOSE of getting high.

But even the culture you reference doesn’t sit well with me. I may have grown up in a more conservative area than you, but NO ONE consumed alcohol while working or well before they had to go to work. It was severely frowned upon. If found with alcohol on your breath, in just about any occupation, you’d find yourself unemployed almost immediately.

The collapse of our financial system and a global nuclear war strike me as more important than some kids smoking weed.

Color me crazy.

You can’t be actively concerned about several deleterious societal developments at the same time?

Unless the people making government and military policy are kids smoking weed.

But when I was in high school, it was considered "rebellion". Now it's celebrated.

Yes, and now it's the establishment that pushes it. That's the same establishment that pushes the jab.

Common man, it's safe, effective, and everybody is doing it.

Submit to our control.

Depends on which decade, which continent, and which industry you hail from...in my experience, the behavior described was mostly the norm.

“Seems like marijuana usage by youths has always been a thing.”

Since the early 70’s, definitely, and that was in redneck Texas. I have plenty of retired millionaire friends who are 40-50 year users. They drink too, though they have all stopped smoking cigs. A few still like cigars.

I used to take light rail to work to downtown Dallas, the cars would reek of “skunk” marijuana.

"But what do you expect from a bunch of potheads rationalizing their pot use?"

I'm in the middle on this. I count myself as real libertarian in many ways. Yes, I want pot legalized, even though I've never toted. But more than that I want the gubment to get rid of all welfare and quit taxing us to pay for welfare. I believe the best way to war against drugs is letting people experience the natural consequences of doping up. Don't punish people for it, but don't give them a "safety net" either.

I just wish fellow libertarians didn't put all their energy into legalizing pot. I voted for Trump in 2016 instead of Gary Johnson largely because Johnson came out in favor of a carbon tax. He was going to help the Dims crush us with energy restrictions, which impacts all of our lives. Yet the so-called libertarians voted for Johnson because he was for legalizing pot? Is that all there is to being a "libertarian" nowadays?

I’ll take your word for pot use as I would not know. What I saw growing up was white collar businessmen and their wives on the west coast and military officers. They all drank and smoked. My friends were children of that generation, two of whom became general officers. Both teetotalers.
